Renwick Gallery is pleased to open our fall season with three consecutive one-week long presentations of moving image based works.

The first presentation, which features new work by Tim Ridlen will run from Tuesday September 14th through the 18th.

The overall exhibition has been conceived as a situation somewhere between a series of film screenings and a more conventional gallery exhibition. It is a group exhibition in which the relation between the invited artists is enacted by durational and not just spatial sequencing. All of the invited artists will be presenting video based works; from an installation of multiple videos playing and looping across various mounted monitors and projections throughout the gallery, to a single channel projection, to a video situated amongst printed text and image.

The first presentation, which features new work by Tim Ridlen involves the processing of societal and autobiographical conventions and routines through video’s capacity to construct new forms of narrative with montage and editing techniques. His installations of sometimes looping, sometimes overlapping videos indicates the significance of a moving image’s syntax, how each video relates, coordinates and corresponds to another. On display will be various segments taken and channeled from two longer compiled works, In 16:9 and Items Recalled (both works 2010). In 16:9 takes as a source the artist’s childhood home movies and how developing technologies have encouraged this kind of material to be translated into evolving formats and mediums, but all the while undergoing subtle shifts in the terrain of aspect ratios and overall fidelity. Items Recalled is concerned with the shelf life of various commodities as they circulate in the world, from periodicals to milk to medicine corresponding to the rise and fall of their demand, their currentness, their safety and their availability. Items Recalled tracks the very usefulness of these items and how dependent that is on exterior systems and influences.

Ridlen was born in St. Louis, Missouri and first started shooting video at home as a child of the early nineties. Ridlen recently completed his MFA from Bard College in New York, and he previously received his BA/BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work has been screened and exhibited at LAXART (Los Angeles), Tät Gallery (Berlin), Roots and Culture (Chicago), Galerie West (Den Haag), and Boots Contemporary Art Space (St. Louis), Butcher Shop Dogmatic (Chicago) and MWNM (New York).

The second presentation which features work by Jay Chung and Q Takeki Maeda will run from Tuesday September 21st through the 25th.

The third and final presentation which features work by Dani Gal will run from Tuesday September 28th through October 2nd.

The exhibition will make use of Open edition SqU by Eric Anglès and John Martin Widger. Open edition SqU is a wooden bench on casters that sits two persons comfortably. For the occasion of this series of presentations at Renwick, two copies of the benches are made available to co-exhibitors to suit their respective installation needs. As all of Eric Anglès’ work, Open edition SqU is an unlimited edition and is exhibited only in group contexts.
