Machines may move in straight lines but human beings and above all artists rarely do. Their inbetweens are very often placed along a path that describe curves or arcs. Our exhibition will depict Gunter Damisch‘s artistic evolution. In addition, it will provide a glimpse into the past, present and even the possible future. The inbetweens—the works from the past evolve smoothly into new ideas and concepts to complement and enhance them.
Born in Steyr, Upper Austria in 1958, currently living in Vienna and Freidegg, Gunter Damisch studied graphic and painting (lectureship of Max Melcher and Arnulf Rainer) at the Academy of fine Arts, Vienna. In 1985 he was invited to the 18th Biennale of Sao Paulo, Brazil. He used to be part of the group “Neue Wilde” (New Wilds) which focused on the process of painting and the physicality of paint. He never left behind drawing and graphic art even when woodcut and etching become more of an interest to him. His work expanded in the last years to large bronze and aluminum sculptures which give a three dimensional, tangible implementation to his micro- and macrocosms themis – using the process-terms of “field”, “world”, “stream” and “path” influenced by sociology, physics and natural science.
Since 1992 Professor at the Academy of fine Arts, Vienna. In 2005 he was represented in “New Abstract Painting from Austria” touring exhibitions in China by the MUMOK, Vienna. Among his major solo shows are the ones at Galerie Michael Haas, Berlin, Folkwangmuseum, Essen, Galerie van de Loo, Munich, Galerie Vidal-Saint Phalle, Paris, Sammlung Nannen, Emden, Galerie Elisabeth & Klaus Thoman, Innsbruck, Galerie Ernst Hilger, Vienna and several Kunstvereine in Austria and Germany. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions nationally and internationally.
