The Dorissa building in Wynwood has a legacy of spawning creative products. The Maldonado Family (OMM Project), with the guidance of Milagros Maldonado, purchased Dorissa for the home of Miami Biennale, a non-profit organization that works to establish initiatives in the arts that stimulate funding from both public and private institutions; to create projects that develop and promote interactive platforms in the arts for education and cultural development. With a main event every two years that focuses on education through art; Miami Biennale will be fulfilling its main objective of promoting a creative dialogue between Miami, its multi-layered cultural community, and the world.
The first exhibitions debuting during Art Basel Miami Beach are titled Beyond the Erotic. From the Collection of Milagros Maldonado curated by Jose Antonio Navarrete, and Leo Matiz. The Expanded Eye curated by Osbel Suarez.
Beyond the Erotic. From the Collection of Milagros Maldonado includes a number of important works that she began collecting in Paris in the early 1980s, interested in the works of Latin American artists based in that city. The collection quickly surged beyond its initial objectives and constituted itself as a repertory of works produced from the 1920s to the present by world artists. Beyond the Erotic explores the relationship between the erotics of collecting and the role of meaning in the process of conforming the collection. The works are grouped in four sections, respectively titled: Invention of Place, Essay on Permanence, Erotic Instinct, and Flows.
An impressive list of artists is included in Beyond the Erotic: Claudio Abate, Ramón Alejandro, Jacobo Borges, Fernando Botero, Lola Álvarez Bravo, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Luis Caballero, Agustín Cárdenas, María Fernanda Cardoso, Leonora Carrington, Consuelo Castañeda, Emiliano di Cavalcanti, Hernán Díaz, Edouard Duval-Carrié, El Anatsui, Gonzalo Fonseca, José Gamarra, Dionisio González, Seydou Keita, Wifredo Lam, Yao Lu, André Masson, Leo Matiz, Roberto Matta, Atelier Morales, Michele Oka Doner, Marta María Pérez Bravo, Francis Picabia, Man Ray, Armando Reverón, Victoriano de los Ríos, Francisco Toledo, and Tilsa Tsuchiya.
The Expanded Eye offers the singular gaze of Leo Matiz, deemed by critics to be one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. The show focuses on three themes of Matiz’s body of work: the world of vegetation, the much-prized images of geometric abstraction, and the Universidad Central of Caracas, campus.
