Context Clayton Campbell is an introduction to the 40- year career of artist Clayton Campbell. Exploring the evolution of his photo-based works from 1970 to present, Context Clayton Campbell begins with the artist’s earliest works in New York. His career spans his resistance to the Viet Nam war, the 1980′s Pictures Generation, the 1990′s Los Angeles social activist community, and the current era of experimental digital photography. Containing a unique personal narrative by the artist, Context Clayton Campbell links his personal history to significant moments in the development of his approach to photo based media. Included is commentary by curators Robert Sain and Ciara Ennis.
Clayton Campbell is the Artistic Director of 18th Street Arts Center whose work has been recently exhibited at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Nam June Paik Art Center, Korea; WYSPA Institute of Art, Gdansk; and the Aaran Gallery, Tehran, Iran.

Dispatches from a Journey to the Green Room

This high-quality coffee table sized (11″ X 13″) hardbound book consists of color drawings, sketches, and text from Michael Barnard’s sketchbook journals stretching back 50 years to 1959. It details Barnard’s intensely personal journey as a surfer, artist, film-maker, and spiritual seeker from pre-adolescence into adulthood, fatherhood, and beyond. The first printing is a limited edition of 100, each copy numbered and signed by the artist.
Michael W. Barnard is a well- known documentary film-maker and photographer, and is artist in residence at 18th Street Arts Center.
An Artist for President

Twenty five years ago, Susanna Bixby Dakin launched her candidacy as An Artist for President. A seminal durational performance art piece, it took Dakin from the art studio to the bully pulpit as she set out to prove that “the nation is an artwork and we the people are the artists”.
An Artist for President is a personal reflection of Dakin’s and campaign manager Lowell Darling’s journey across the blurry boundaries between art and politics. It is a meditation on the possibility that sometimes citizens really want (whether we know it or not) to be allowed and encouraged to participate in the ongoing creation of our nation.
Susanna Bixby Dakin is a founder of 18th Street Arts Center and a long time artist and social activist.
Alternative Art Incubators: Cultivating Collaboration and Innovation in Los Angeles Public Art

Alternative Art Incubators examines how the creation and production of innovative public art in Los Angeles might be cultivated through the concept of an “Alternative Arts Incubator” that blends the collaboration, experimentation and multi-disciplined practice of alternative spaces with the strategic paradigm for sustainability and artist exposure at the core of arts incubators.
