BOOK SIGNING WITH THE ARTIST
AT DAVID ZWIRNER – Stand G13
Thursday, October 13, 3–4 PM
www.davidzwirner.com

David Zwirner is pleased to present new works by Michael Riedel at this year’s Frieze Art Fair, to be held at Regent’s Park in London (October 13–16). The artist’s new silk-screened canvases are part of his ongoing series of “poster paintings” begun in 2010 and on view at David Zwirner in New York earlier this year.

On Thursday, October 13, the gallery will host a book signing with the artist to celebrate his recently released Perlstein (Koenig Books).

About the book

Perlstein continues the series of publications (Oskar, 2003; Tirala, 2006; Meckert, 2009; amongst others), which are published as independent works parallel to Riedel’s exhibitions. The artist’s texts are often generated from unedited transcriptions of recordings that he frames through a set of predetermined circumstances. He labels these works “text productions.” Perlstein includes a transcript of a talk given by the artist at various venues between 2009 and 2011. His talk provides a broad overview of his publishing activities, beginning with the paper bag he wore during a lecture at the Städelschule, Frankfurt, in 1997 to his most recent catalogue The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. Riedel’s talk is given as a PowerPoint presentation, which lasts approximately 45 minutes and shows 370 images. The illustrations included in the book are screen shots taken during the PowerPoint presentation at intervals when the slides changed. The choice of the transitions took place automatically and randomly. In addition to the English translation of the lecture, the book also includes the original German text and a French translation.

About the artist

Michael Riedel was born in 1972 and lives and works in Frankfurt, Germany. He received a Meisterschüler at the Städelschule in 2000. Over the past decade his artistic practice has embodied a wide range of mediums and formats, including large-scale works on canvas, fabric works, film and video, audio recordings, artist’s books, posters, installations, and events.

Riedel’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Kunstverein, Hamburg (2010); Städel Museum, Frankfurt (2008); KunstraumInnsbruck, Austria (2007); and Portikus, Frankfurt (2002). His work has also been shown in major group exhibitions at prominent venues throughout Europe including Kunsthaus Bregenz, Austrias (2011); Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (GAM), Turin (2010); Tate Modern, London (2009); the Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art (2007); the Moscow Biennale at the Lenin Museum (2005); and the Vienna Secession (2003).

Riedel’s third solo exhibition at David Zwirner was The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog (February–March 2011). His two previous solo shows at the gallery comprised a return to his Filmed Films archive (Michael Riedel: Filmed Film, 2008) and a recreation of a Neo Rauch show held at David Zwirner, with black and white digital prints of the painter’s works reproduced as panels and mounted in various configurations in the same position the originals were hung. In contrast to Rauch’s static paintings, Riedel’s panels could be put together in a near-endless number of arrangements (Michael Riedel: Neo, 2005).
