The Oklahoma City Museum of Art presents PROJECTSCREEN: Catharina van Eetvelde, from March 27–April 22, 2012.
PROJECTSCREEN, a new program at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art presents video by contemporary artists working nationally and internationally. The series is guest curated by Shannon Fitzgerald. The series will rotate monthly thus presenting work by 12 artists each year.
From March 27–April 22, 2012 PROJECTSCREEN will feature two drawn animations titled Cruise and Slice by Brussels-born, Paris-based artist Catharina van Eetvelde. Interested in the interface between visual form and syntax, Van Eetvelde blurs geopolitical boundaries and various impulses rooted in human nature within exceptionally sparse narratives. In an exploration into intricate notions about the cross-pollination of nature, humanity, culture, territory, and power, Van Eetvelde layers multiple visual knowledge systems, mapping structures, and scientific inquiry (cartography, maritime navigation, flags, circuitry, directionals, genetics, mechanical drawing) to create interconnected sets or parts that form an even more complex whole.
Both Cruise and Slice are made in collaboration with Abigail Lang, a French writer who provides a lyrical voice narration alongside elegant syncopated soundscapes that yield a tranquil harmony between the spoken word and shifting optical imagery. “The PROJECTSCREEN series presents video by artists working with various styles and approaches and a myriad of formal and conceptual strategies” said Shannon Fitzgerald. “It offers a broad range of work that reflects relevant current interests, resonant themes, and varied, yet distinct media uses” continued Fitzgerald.
Last month New York based artist Marina Zurkow was featured with two videos titled Slurb and Weights & Measures. Future artists include Kansas City based artist Barry Anderson, from April 25–May 27, 2012 and Los Angeles based artist Allison Schulnik, from May 30–July 1, 2012. “This is a fantastic program for the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. We are making exciting examples of video art accessible, at no cost, to all who visit the Museum” said Glen Gentele, Director and CEO.
About Catharina van Eetvelde
Catharina van Eetvelde was born in Ghent, Belgium, in 1967 and currently lives and works in Paris, France. She uses a wide range of media, including both traditional materials and advanced technologies—often in combination with one another—as well as animation, film, sound, drawing, sculpture, and installation. She studied at the University of Ghent and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
Since 2005, she has exhibited her work internationally in solo exhibitions at Galerie Greta Meert, Brussels; Galerie Anne Barrault, Paris; Galerie Conrads, Dusseldorf; Maison des Arts George Pompidou, Carjac, France; Galerie Tanit, Munich, among others. She has been included in group exhibitions and/or screenings at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Brussels; Bernardo Collection Museum, Lisbon; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the National Museum of Taiwan, Taipei; the Foundation Caixa and the Museum of Contemporary Art, both in Barcelona; and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, among others.
