Working in partnership with the local community, galleries, national institutions, and an international network of curatorial partners, the Brooklyn art collective United Photo Industries is building PHOTOVILLE—a unique, large-scale, photographic village with shipping containers in the heart of Brooklyn Bridge Park, located on the Brooklyn Waterfront.

PHOTOVILLE will comprise a mix of free exhibitions, talks, hands-on workshops, nighttime projections, and a photo dog run, along with a summer food & beer garden, creating a photographic destination like no other—and it’s free for all to attend!
PHOTOVILLE will include:

SHIPPING CONTAINER EXHIBITS
Over 35 containers (20 and 40 feet in length) will house photographic exhibits from all over the world. UPI is partnering with global organizations and local exhibitors as well as conducting an open call for submissions, opening the field to the greater public.

THE FENCE
United Photo Industries has joined forces with Photo District News (PDN) and Brooklyn Bridge Park to curate and produce a summer-long outdoor photo exhibition. Printed on photographic mesh and measuring more than 1000 feet in length, The Fence will be a public photographic installation like no other, with an expected audience of more than 300,000 visitors over two months during the summer of 2012. Photographers of all levels are invited to submit images that capture the essence of “community” and fit into one or more of the following categories: Home, Street, People, Creatures, and Play. For more information and to participate, please visit photoville.nielsencontests.com.

TENTS
Tents will house vendors, photo book publishers, and camera gear demonstrations, as well as information booths for art schools, local entities, and foundations.

CAMERA OBSCURA
A shipping container sized, walk-in Camera Obscura.

NIGHTLY PROJECTIONS & DAILY PERFORMANCES AND TALKS
Outdoor Projections showcasing the best of the best of documentary photography and talks, nightly. The centrally located Stage will be utilized for daily performances and talks.

PANEL DISCUSSIONS & TALKS
A daily schedule of artist presentations and panel discussions by leading photographers and photo industry experts.

WORKSHOPS
Workshops conducted by photographers, editors, and independent publishers aimed at professionals, students and families. Topics will include: the art of self-publishing, building a pinhole camera, tintypes, protecting intellectual property, and more.

FOOD & BEER GARDEN
Central to the Village will be a communal beer & food garden serving artisanal snacks and chilled brews.

FOTO CANINE RUN
A dog run where the pooches are the stars, with a photo booth and a communal gallery where pictures will be posted on a Paws Wall of Fame.

ANDRE FELICIANO’S GREENHOUSE
Every village needs a greenhouse, so UPI is commissioning Brazilian artist and gardener André Feliciano (blog.natureza.art.br) to create and fill one in the middle of PHOTOVILLE. A singular public art project in its own right, the PHOTOVILLE Camera Greenhouse will be open for the public to photograph. It’s a garden where taking a photo is natural and a necessary part of the system; what could possibly sprout in this photographic greenhouse?

PHOTOVILLE’s growing list of partners includes Brooklyn Bridge Park, Two Trees Management, DUMBO BID, East River Ferry, Brooklyn Arts Council, Leica Camera, Photo District News (USA), International Center of Photography (USA), Parsons, The New School for Design (USA), Fototeca Guatemala (GT), Magnum Foundation (USA), VII Photo Agency (USA), MediaStorm (USA), Tierney Fellowship (USA), The Lucie Foundation (USA), Hellenic Center for Photography (Greece), Lodz FotoFestiwal (Poland), Center for Alternative Photography (USA), Hey, Hot Shot! and 20×200 (USA), PHaT Photo Magazine (Japan), Naarden Photo Festival (Netherlands), Daylight Magazine (USA), Empas.is, High Noon Culture & Art Corporation (China), The Center for Photography, Woodstock (USA), FotoVisura (USA), Conveyor Arts (USA), Dumbo Arts Center (USA), WIN Initiative and Lomography, and more will be announced in the coming weeks.
