The exhibition Graphology explores a genealogy of automated drawing from a contemporary perspective. The scope of the exhibition reaches back to the beginning of the 20th century and includes artists working today to question the status and impact of a trace, produced through the interaction of man and machine.

Pierre Bismuth: Following the left hand of Jacques Lacan – the soul and the unconscious (En suivant la main gauche de Jacques Lacan – l’âme et l’inconscient) (2010). First screening and talk about this on-going series of films.
Anna Barham: Slick Flection (2012). The development of a text first performed by the artist in 2009. This new version results from a dialogue between Anna Barham and tap dancer Carrie Topley, who will perform the piece.
Peter Kubelka: Paper films made in exile. A talk about his Films on paper (1958–60), exhibited for the first time in Graphology, and screening of Arnulf Rainer (1960).

Book launch
Graphology: drawing from automatism and automation explores the varied technologies of visualisation that allow for a particular tension between the hand and the medium, between automatism and automation. Images made in disparate eras are juxtaposed with essays that adopt a media-archaeological approach to explore a genealogy of automated drawing (Edwin Carels), a reflection on the liquid languages of Henri Michaux and Marcel Broodthaers (Ed Krčma), and a philosophical musing on the unavoidably abstract nature of drawing (Thomas Zummer).

Biographies
Pierre Bismuth (b. 1963, France; lives and works in Brussels and New York) is firmly inscribed into the heritage of conceptual art, working with a wide variety of media such as film, installations, photography, and video, tending to destabilise prearranged codes and stimulate the viewer to develop critical ideas.
Anna Barham (b. 1974, UK; lives and works in London) works across media to investigate states of possibility, incompletion, and disintegration through language and mathematical structures. Her works are often the physical manifestation of thought processes that develop through the manipulation of a variety of parameters and materials.
Peter Kubelka (b. 1934; lives and works in Vienna) is a legendary, multifaceted artist and theoretician who has worked in the art forms of film, cuisine, music, architecture, speaking, and writing. A leading exponent, since the early 1950s, of international avant garde film, his work has been screened throughout Europe, the USA, and Japan.
Edwin Carels is a curator, M HKA, Antwerp, and researcher in the arts, KASK/Hogent.
