Spike Issue 32 magazine launch in Basel
Dear readers,
We’re happy to announce that we’ll be hosting a launch party in honour of our summer issue at Kunsthalle Basel on Wednesday, 13 June, starting at 6pm (followed by the opening of the exhibition by Paul Sietsema at 7pm). You’ll be able to pick up a copy of the magazine, see a performative intervention by gallerist and writer Jonas Žakaitis, and have a drink designed by curator Olivia Shao. Afterwards, the party will continue at Lady Bar.
The new issue features an interview with Roe Ethridge by Fionn Meade, a text by John Beeson on recent performance-related works, a portrait of Austrian-born video artist Ursula Mayer written by Filipa Ramos, and an essay on Jimmie Durham by Jonas Žakaitis.
In the fifth part of our series exploring multiple roles in the art world, Markus Miessen pleads for the “incompetent master.”
Also, curator Charles Esche writes about a work that has influenced him—the Raum der Gegenwart (1930/2009) by László Moholy-Nagy.
Daniel Baumann talks with British artist Alan Kane about John Berger’s groundbreaking book Ways of Seeing from 1972.
Tenzing Barshee examines the brand of the “young Swiss artist.”
Romanian artist Ion Grigorescu presents five artists whose works interest him: Florina Coulin, Ovidiu Fenes, Bogdan Vlăduţă, Paul Gherasim, and Matei Lăzărescu.
Including reviews of the Berlin Biennale by Raimar Stange, Antek Walczak by Chris Kraus, Bjarne Melgaard by Karen Archey, Burhan Dogançay by Patricia Ellis, Kaucyila Brooke & Volker Eichelmann by Ursula Maria Probst, and Struktur & Organismus by Jakob Neulinger, among others.
… and much more.
Come visit us at our booth at Art Basel—Z2—and get signed poster works by Tom Burr, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Roe Ethridge! You’ll find all the information about the launch party on our Facebook page or on our new website.
If you don’t find Spike at your favourite newsstand, please write us or subscribe and get it in your mailbox wherever you are.
