The Wassaic Project, a multidisciplinary arts organization located in the hamlet of Wassaic, New York, will host the fifth annual Wassaic Project Summer Festival, a free multi-disciplinary celebration of art, music, film, dance, and community from August 3–5, 2012. This year’s Festival features the Wassaic Project’s summer exhibition, Return to Rattlesnake Mountain, curated by guest jurors Max Bode, Kat Cohn, Jessica Wallen, and Wassaic Project co-directors Eve Biddle, Bowie Zunino, and Jeff Barnett-Winsby. The Festival and exhibition will bring together works by over 100 artists and will include live music by more than 20 bands, poetry readings, dance performances, film screenings, and much more.
The Wassaic Project’s annual Summer Festival and exhibition are housed in historic buildings located in the small hamlet of Wassaic, NY. The Wassaic Project aims to present art in a venue that challenges the white walls of traditional art spaces, focusing instead on site-sensitive installations and performances that encourage active dialogue. The 2012 Summer Festival offers a unique weekend-long opportunity for the general public, as well as artists of all media, to come together, exchange ideas, learn new things, and engage in a thriving arts community—free of cost.
Return to Rattlesnake Mountain is housed in the Maxon Mills, the Wassaic Project’s iconic seven-story grain elevator turned exhibition space. The polyvalent properties of the exhibition speak to the building’s unique architecture and to current movements in emerging art, and reflect the openness and diversity of the Wassaic Project community.

The music lineup features headliners The Stepkids and Avan Lava, as well as Falu, Bing Jing Ling, The Suzan, Chrome Canyon, Victoire, Friend Roulette, Beatie Wolfe, and Thieving Irons, among others. The film program includes a selection of award-winning short and feature films, including Grainger David’s The Chair, A Brief History of John Baldessari by Henry Joost and Ariel Shulman, Mike Birbiglia’s Sleepwalk with Me, and the Danish comedy Klown. The dance program features performances by Otis Cook and Alyssa Cassidy, Shandoah Goldman, Maré Hieronimus, Jenni Hong, Whitney Hunter, Freddie de Jesus, Toni Renee Johnson, and dancers from Earl Mosley’s Institute for the Arts.
