Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions at Rutgers University is pleased to announce the release of a new variable edition by Lynda Benglis. With collaborator Anne McKeown, the artist created a series of 13 paper sculptures. The sculptures were created with overbeaten abaca that was air-dried on a wire support. The wire bent and moved as it was used time after time, creating variable outcomes for each sculpture. This innovative process embraced a letting go of control that resulted in unexpected and lively variations in each piece. Eleven of the sculptures have been hand-painted with black paint and shellac and of those, nine have also been painted with phosphorescence, and glow in the dark.
Two of the sculptures were recently featured in Lynda Benglis’ solo exhibition at the Erik Hauser Art Foundation in Rottweil, Germany (July 21–August 26, 2012). Lynda Benglis is the Erich Hauser Laureate 2012.
In addition, Benglis created a series of 19 paintings on heavyweight Japanese paper. The paintings are made with black ink and gold acrylic and are the source for the marks painted on her paper sculptures.
