Momenta Art is pleased to announce an outstanding new edition by Mickalene Thomas. Momenta Art published the edition, titled Portrait of Marie Sitting in Black and White, on the occasion of the institution’s 25th Anniversary.
New York-based artist Mickalene Thomas is best known for her elaborate paintings composed of rhinestones, acrylic, and enamel. Thomas introduces a complex vision of what it means to be a woman and expands common definitions of beauty. Her work stems from her long study of art history and the classical genres of portraiture, landscape, and still life.
Inspired by various sources that range from the 19th-century Hudson River School to Édouard Manet, Henri Matisse, and Romare Bearden, she continues to explore notions of beauty from a contemporary perspective infused with the more recent influences of popular culture and pop art.
Thomas’s work has been included in many prominent group exhibitions, including: Greater New York,2005, MoMA PS1, New York; and is featured in the permanent public collections of the Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Modern Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, to name only a few. Thomas is represented by Lehmann Maupin in New York; Rhona Hoffman Gallery in Chicago; and Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects.
Mickalene Thomas: Origin of the Universe is the artist’s first solo museum exhibition. The exhibition was organized by the Santa Monica Museum of Art and Lisa Melandri, former Deputy Director of Exhibitions and Programs, and highlights recent bodies of work that examine interior and exterior environments in relation to the female figure. Their settings are often inspired by her 1970s childhood. Its presentation at the Brooklyn Museum is organized by Eugenie Tsai, John and Barbara Vogelstein Curator of Contemporary Art, and is on view in the Morris A. and Meyer Schapiro Wing from September 28, 2012 to January 20, 2013. The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston will mount an exhibition of Thomas’s work in the Fotene Demoulas Gallery from December 12, 2012 to April 14, 2013.
