As pioneer of the forthcoming art platform Zorlu Center Performing Arts Center, and the associate sponsor of Contemporary Istanbul 2012, Zorlu Center proudly presents the book launch of Yane Calovski: OBJE’CT.
The book launch will take place on November 24th at 18:15h as part of CI Dialogues program of Contemporary Istanbul 2012, at the Conference Hall of Istanbul Convention and Exhibition Center and it will be accompanied by a conversation between the editor of the book, Basak Senova and the artist, Yane Calovski.
OBJE’CT is the first book of Book for Artists Series of the Zorlu Center Art Collection, curated by Basak Senova. OBJE’CT is also a humble attempt to address the specific characteristics, unfolding issues, and the line of the Zorlu Center Art Collection through Calovski’s line of thinking and working. Concurrently, it is the first comprehensive publication focusing on the work of artist Yane Calovski, who produced an object for this collection in 2011. Calovski’s conceptual work renders the incompleteness and lapsing of narratives and history. Therefore, in the same manner of an archaeologist, he is obsessed with researching and processing archives. His work is nurtured by the findings and missing links in an archive of any kind; sometimes the work is embodied in personal archives and narratives, and sometimes the work is set up in the public realm.
Archives reveal and conceal personal and collective processes. Calovski’s research resonates between these acts of concealing and revealing; thus, his work enchants with the alchemy of turning lapses of memory and missing links into ephemeral sequences of events, situations, feelings, and objects. Research is the key process for Calovski’s working methodology. His artistic practice covers diverse works that range from drawings, objects, photographs, video, site-specific installations to performance. Accordingly, his work contextualizes and addresses the function of ideas in various forms of presentation, production, research, and analysis.
OBJE’CT presents Yane Calovski in conversation with the editor, accompanied by an extended critical article on Calovski’s work by Astrid Wege and a fictional scenario by Sebastian Cichocki that aims to emphasize the unrecorded aspects of documenting art. The book introduces Calovski’s selected multilayered works since 1998 that have been exhibited at various venues and events, including Tate Britain, Manifesta 7, European Kunsthalle, Kunshallen Brands, Baltic Art Center, Museum of Contemporary Art Skopje, and AR/GE Kunst Galleria Museo.

About the artist
Yane Calovski studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, (1992–1996) and Bennington College (1997), and has participated in the post-graduate studio programs at both the CCA Kitakyushu (1999–2000), and the Jan van Eyck Academy (2002–2004). He holds a masters degree from Linkoping University in Sweden (2011). For his practice, he has been awarded a Pew Fellowship in the Arts (2001) among other grants and residences. In 2004, he co-founded the art and curatorial research platform press to exit project space in Skopje with artist Hristina Ivanoska. The art practice of Calovski is concerned with experiential ideas often situated in the site-specificity of a new cultural and political geography, often addressing the incompleteness and lapsing of narratives and history. His objects, drawings, videos and installations often emerge from his evolving experience within disparate international contexts, and have been shown internationally in individual and group exhibitions at venues such as Tate Britain (London), Museum of Contemporary Art (Skopje), the European Kunsthalle (Cologne), Contemporary Art Center (Vilnius), Konshallen Brandts (Odense), Kronika (Bytom), Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Drawing Center (New York), and others. He has also exhibited at Manifesta 3 (Ljubljana, 2000) and Manifesta 7 (Bolzano, 2008).

About the editor
Basak Senova is a curator and designer. She studied literature and graphic design (MFA in Graphic Design and Ph.D. in Art, Design and Architecture at Bilkent University) and attended the 7th Curatorial Training Programme of Stichting De Appel, Amsterdam. She has been writing on art, technology and media, initiating and developing projects and curating exhibitions since 1995. Şenova is the editor of art-ist 6, Kontrol Online Magazine, Lapses book series, UNCOVERED and Aftermath among other publications. She is an editorial correspondent for ibraaz.org and one of the founding members of NOMAD, as well as the organizer of ctrl_alt_del and Upgrade!Istanbul. Şenova was the curator of the Pavilion of Turkey at the 53rd Venice Biennale (2009) and lectured as assistant professor at the Faculty of Communication, Kadir Has University, Istanbul (2006–2010). Her recent exhibition projects include Conscious in Coma (Goethe-Institut, Istanbul, 2006), Rejection Episodes (Vooruit Kunstencentrum, Gent, Belgium, 2006), Unrecorded (Aksanat, Istanbul, 2008), Soft Borders (São Paulo, Brazil, 2010) and Aftermath (Akbank Sanat, Istanbul, 2012). Currently, she co-curates the UNCOVERED (2010–2013) project in Cyprus and the 2nd Biennial of Contemporary Art, D-0 ARK Underground (2013) in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
