Art Dubai announces the 76 galleries selected to take part in the seventh edition of the fair, with a line-up that includes some of the most influential art spaces from the Middle East, Asia and Africa as well as leading galleries from across Europe and America. Participants from 29 countries will be involved in what promises to be the most dynamic edition in Art Dubai’s history.
Art Dubai epitomizes the globalised phenomenon that is today’s art world. The gallery selection process, conducted by an independent committee, has been rigorous, with the available positions heavily oversubscribed; the gallery line-up is particularly diverse. Marker, a curated section of concept stands which focuses each year on a particular theme or geography, exemplifies Art Dubai’s role as a site of discovery and cross-cultural exchange. Following a focus on Indonesia in 2012, Marker 2013 is curated by Lagos-based curator Bisi Silva, and explores the nature of changing cities through the work of artists and arts organisations from West Africa. The invited spaces for Marker 2013 are: Centre for Contemporary Art (Lagos), Espace doual’art (Douala), Maison Carpe Diem (Segou), Nubuke Foundation (Accra) and Raw Material Company (Dakar).
Following the success of Art Dubai in 2012, many key galleries will be returning in March 2013, including Athr Gallery (Jeddah), Marianne Boesky Gallery (New York), Galerie Chantal Crousel (Paris), D Gallerie (Jakarta), Experimenter (Kolkata), Alexander Gray Associates (New York), Grey Noise (Dubai), Galerie Rodolphe Janssen (Brussels), Galerie Krinzinger (Vienna), Platform China (Beijing/Hong Kong), The Third Line (Dubai), The Pace Gallery (London/Beijing/New York) and Sfeir-Semler (Hamburg/Beirut), among many others.
New entrants include Greenaway (Adelaide/Berlin), Yvon Lambert (Paris), Victoria Miro (London), Almine Rech Gallery (Paris/Brussels), Schleicher/Lange (Berlin/Paris) and Tanja Wagner (Berlin), plus Rampa and Rodeo, among five galleries from Istanbul participating in the 2013 fair.
The seventh edition of Art Dubai reflects the ever-accelerating growth of the local and regional art scene; the fair hosts more artists and galleries from the Middle East than any other arts event. Over 500 artists will participate in Art Dubai 2013, within the gallery halls and across the extensive non-commercial programming, including Etel Adnan, Kutlug Ataman, Yto Barrada, Daniel Buren, Annabel Daou, Wim Delvoye, Meschac Gaba, Wade Guyton, Zarina Hashmi, Mona Hatoum, Iman Issa, Idris Khan, Yayoi Kusama, MadeIn Company, François Morellet, Nasir Nasrallah, Otobong Nkanga, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Seth Price, Ibrahim Quraishi, Walid Raad, Anri Sala, Taryn Simon, Rirkrit Tiravanija, James Turrell, Joana Vasconcelos, Danh Vo and Akram Zaatari.
The seventh edition of Art Dubai takes place March 20–23, 2013, at Madinat Jumeirah. Besides the gallery halls, the fair boasts a strong not-for-profit programme of curatorial and educational projects, including artists’ and curators’ residencies; site-specific works and commissioned performances; workshops; the unveiling of works by the winners of the annual Abraaj Capital Art Prize; and the critically acclaimed Global Art Forum.
Founded by Art Dubai in 2007, the Global Art Forum brings together protagonists from the art world and beyond for a week of innovative talk, debate and performance. In 2013, the Forum is entitled ‘It Means This’and explores the concept of ‘definitionism,’ taking to task the words, phrases and clichés that proliferate in the art world today. Curated by Istanbul-based critic HG Masters, with Shumon Basar as Commissioner, Global Art Forum_7 takes place in Doha and Dubai, March 17–23, 2013; it is presented by Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) and is held in partnership with Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art (Qatar Museums Authority).
Art Dubai Projects is a not-for-profit programme of new commissions that explores the fabric and economy of an art fair. This critically acclaimed, interactive programme features upcoming artists from across the Middle East and Asia, and includes residencies, site-specific projects and performances, plus radio transmissions and artist-conceived children’s projects.
