In response to the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy on the arts in New York, Paddle8 has teamed up with Creative Time and New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) to hold RE.START, an online auction benefiting artists and arts organizations affected by the storm. Beginning November 27 and continuing through December 11, 2012, RE.START will offer thirty lots featuring works by some of the leading international artists of our day, many of whom have set new records at the recent auction week. These include Ai Weiwei, Tauba Auerbach, Nobuyoshi Araki, Dan Colen, David Hockney, Nate Lowman, Beatriz Milhazes, Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara, Gabriel Orozco, Kiki Smith, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Aaron Young, among others.

All commissions from the sale will be donated to storm relief efforts, with Creative Time distributing half the money raised to nonprofit art organizations and NYFA allocating the other half to individual artists in need. NYFA’s portion of the proceeds will be added to an emergency relief fund it established for individual artists in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York, to be distributed every two weeks through an online application reviewed by panelists from the impacted states. At Creative Time, the Board of Directors has agreed to match online donations to the Creative Time year-end appeal and contribute that amount to the total raised by the auction.

The RE.START auction will mark the launch of Paddle8′s new themed auction platform. This platform will offer a monthly themed auction to benefit a nonprofit partner, with lots consigned by the Paddle8 community. The platform offers consignors a new destination to buy and sell fine art works with low commissions for vendors and buyers, no publicly disclosed auction records and the ability to consign works remotely.

A vanguard presenter of public art in New York, Creative Time recently began presenting national and global projects and initiatives, making it the only public arts organization with programs that have reached from New York to New Orleans, Haiti to Hanoi, and Dubai to Denver.
