Permanent sculpture in New York City

Andréhn-Schiptjenko proudly announces the installation of Xavier Veilhan’s first permanent public sculpture in the US.

Jean-Marc (2012) is a site-specific commission by RXR Realty and located outside their offices on the northeast corner of 53rd Street and Avenue of the Americas in New York City.

Encompassing sculpture, installation, painting, photography as well as hybrids of all of these, Xavier Veilhan is also engaged in performance work and filmmaking. At the core of his practice are the possibilities of representation.

For Jean-Marc, Veilhan has used high-tech industrial techniques to mimic what was originally the epitome of human craftsmanship—the statue. A three-dimensional scanning technology to represent the form and volume of human beings has been followed by milling in industrial polyurethane, aluminium or stainless steel. The pieces are intentionally called “statues,” a term that has fallen out of use within contemporary art production insofar as the monumentalisation of human beings has become almost obsolete. The sculptures are renderings of people in the artist’s proximity—friends, family and colleagues. Jean-Marc is a portrait of the artist Jean-Marc Bustamante.

Having received attention for his numerous public projects in France, this is his first permanent outdoor work in the US. The project has been handled by Andréhn-Schiptjenko, Stockholm and Prounworks, New York.

Veilhan, born in 1963, lives and works in Paris. His work is currently on view in the solo shows (IN)balance, The Phillips Collection, Washington; and Rays, La Conservera, Murcia, Spain. Upcoming projects include Xavier Veilhan: Before, Château de Rentilly, Marne-et-Gondoire (March), Architectones, Lautner Sheats-Goldstein Residence, Los Angeles (April), Architectones, Cité Radieuse Le Corbusier, Marseille (June). The Skater, a permanent outdoor piece for Amore Pacific Company in Seoul, will be inaugurated in October 2013.
