PARISIAN LAUNDRY is thrilled to announce the exhibitions of David Armstrong Six and Jeannette Ehlers.
Working from the tradition of assemblage, David Armstrong Six’s practice denotes a realm of associative abstraction that combines the sculptural and spatial sensibilities of minimalism with a provocative focus on the abject. The ten new sculptures in wood, bronze, plaster, metal and glass that were created over the past year in Berlin represent a series of sculptural propositions emerging from the cumulative conflation of a studio-based language. Writing on the work, Berlin-based artist and art critic Rodney Latourelle states: “by working and reworking his chosen materials as he simultaneously scavenges art history for subjective associations and formal spurs, Armstrong Six’s sculptures embody a unique language of material transformations across corporal and cultural dimensions.” Brown Star Plus One is the second solo exhibition by David Armstrong Six at PARISIAN LAUNDRY. The gallery is also delighted to announce the Canadian launch of David Armstrong Six’s catalogue, Three Known Points, published by The Green Box, Berlin, including a text by Scott Lyall and a conversation between the artist and Kristan Horton.
Born in 1968, David Armstrong Six currently lives and works in Montreal, Québec and Berlin, Germany. His work has been exhibited widely throughout Canada, the USA, Europe, and New Zealand including shows at Plug In Contemporary Art, Winnipeg, the Power Plant, Toronto, 381 Red Bull space, Toronto, La Biennale de Montréal, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and White Columns in New York City. David Armstrong Six was awarded the Conseil des arts et lettres du Québec Berlin Residency at the Künstlerhaus Bethanian in 2012. His work will be presented alongside artists such as Birgit Brenner, Kerry Tribe and Tal R in an upcoming exhibition Either/Or, at the Kunsthallen Nikolaj, in Copenhagen and the Haus am Waldsee, Berlin. The work of David Armstrong Six is found in various public, corporate and private collections, including the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, and the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto.
Jeannette Ehlers presents three videos for BLACK BULLETS in the Bunker. Ehlers adopts image manipulation as a mechanism for her photographic and video-based work as these changeable terms allow meaning and identity to be explored. Jeannette Ehlers is of Danish and Trinidadian descent. Recent works have revolved around the Danish slave trade in the colonial era, focusing on blackness and black identity. Her latest video works, Black Bullets, Off the Pig and The March (2012) were filmed on location in Haiti and were inspired by the Haitian revolution. The works are presented as an homage to revolution and the act of revolt.
Born in 1973, Ehlers is currently based in Copenhagen. She graduated from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2006. She has exhibited her work at C&H Art Space, Amsterdam; CBK, Zuidoost, Amsterdam; Museo Del Barrio, New York; ISCP, New York; Kianga Ellis projects, Santa Fe, US; Cartel Gallery London; The Total Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul; Nikolaj Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center, Cph, Denmark; BRAENNEN Gallery, Berlin; and Image 10, Vevey, Switzerland.
