Cardi Black Box, the Milan-based contemporary art gallery, is proud to announce two upcoming exhibitions featuring works by Marnie Weber and Loredana Di Lillo. The shows will be on view April 23 to May 25, 2013.
The Day After Forevermore exhibition centers on Marnie Weber’s film, The Night of Forevermore, set in a fantastical world that exists somewhere between a Hieronymus Bosch painting and a contemporary Halloween horror movie. It follows a young white witch as she embarks on a journey to escape the forces of darkness and regain her own powers of good. The film explores the relationship between this young witch—played by the artist’s daughter, Colette Rose Shaw—and an old witch who has sold her soul to the devil—played by the artist herself. As they traverse through a haunting tableaux vivant, a representation of heaven, purgatory, and hell, Weber’s medieval costuming and cast of period characters underline her interest in the history of witches and witch hunts, and speaks to her overarching interest in the social and political forces that have traditionally shaped representations of good and evil.
This exhibition marks the first European showing of Weber’s film. Accompanying the film will be new large-scale collage paintings on panels evoking the feeling of the film while creating yet another layer of reality. These dark romantic landscapes are filled with witches, monsters and unusual characters, creating surrealist stage sets wherein dramatic scenes take place and are frozen in time.
MOMMY PUFFY DADDY MONSTER will feature Loredana Di Lillo’s multimedia work dealing with her interest in overlapping temporal spaces—specifically childhood and a time of lost innocence as reflected by the exhibition’s singsong title. Di Lillo experiments with drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, photography, and video to unveil underlying societal themes. Starting from her analysis of customs, vices and virtues, local history and identity, she reflects on everyday life by interweaving her artistic practice with the reality she inhabits.
About Marnie Weber
Marnie Weber (b. 1959) lives and works in Los Angeles, California. She received a B.A. at the University of California, Los Angeles. Recent solo exhibitions include The Night of Forevermore, Marc Joncou Contemporary, New York; The Autumn Bear, Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France; and Eternity Forever, Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum, West of Rome Public Art, Altadena, California. Recent group exhibitions include LOST (in LA) presented by FLAX (France Los Angeles Exchange) at LA Municipal Art Gallery, Barnsdall Park, Los Angeles, California. Her work is represented in the permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and the Hammer Museum.
About Loredana Di Lillo
Loredana Di Lillo lives and works in Milan. She holds a BFA in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome. Recent solo shows include SÜD, as part of the residency Residenza d’artista-Level One; and Animal, DOCVA Viafarini, Milan. Selected group exhibitions include Ovovia Italia 61, Un Po d’arte, Turin; Calamitati da Gino, Centro Italiano Arte Contemporanea, Foligno, Italy; Il bel paese dell’arte, Etiche ed estetiche della Nazione, GAMeC, Bergamo, Italy; Premio Lum, Teatro Margherita, Bari, Italy; Emerging Talents, Palazzo Strozzi, Florence; and The Art of Camo, Cardi Black Box, Milan. Di Lillo won the 2005 Talk to the City Prize, Milan, and 13° Premio Cairo, Milan, 2012.
