Counter Editions, the leading UK affordable online art retailer, is to launch in the US with a dedicated US website and a new series of limited editions by renowned New York based artists. Counter Editions will promote the New York launch with a pop-up shop at the New Museum Store, where all the new editions will be on display and available for purchase, as well as online at www.countereditions.com. The pop-up will take place 8–12 May, coinciding with Frieze Art Fair.
Launch prices will start at 750 USD. A sumptuous Mary Heilmann screen print Autumn Wave will retail at 1200 USD and an Ugo Rondinone stained-glass sculpture of a numberless clock face at 3600 USD. More editions by US artists are planned to follow this initial New York launch, with works by Matthew Day Jackson and Joe Bradley already in production.
Counter Editions provides a unique opportunity for art collectors at any level: high-quality artworks by the best contemporary artists at an accessible price. Counter collaborates closely with a considered list of artists, and over the past decade has compiled a diverse catalogue of artworks, from screenprints and photographs to a laser-sintered Rachel Whiteread multiple and a hand-drawn edition by David Shrigley. Responding to an increased demand from international collectors for limited editions by American artists, the New York editions are the first of several forthcoming series of editions by international artists: a German series is due to launch in 2014, with Los Angeles and Latin America series to follow.
Run by influential gallery owner Carl Freedman, Counter Editions is a well-established and respected publisher of limited editions. Founded in London in 2000 at the height of the dotcom boom, its mission from the outset has been to use the Internet to make the ownership of art more democratic without compromising on quality. The prints sell on a dynamic pricing structure, meaning early buyers of new releases will be pleased to see prices increase as the edition sells out. Counter has worked with over 50 leading contemporary artists such as Tracey Emin, Fischli/Weiss, Peter Doig, Christopher Wool and Elizabeth Peyton. Last year, Counter was chosen to produce the official prints of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
