EXPO CHICAGO, the International Exposition of Contemporary and Modern Art, announces more than 20 special exhibitions to be included in the second annual exposition (September 19–22). Dedicated to illustrating and preserving the important link between the arts, philanthropic and nonprofit organizations through unique and high quality exhibitions, EXPO CHICAGO engages the country’s top museums, universities, organizations and institutions. In addition, EXPO CHICAGO announces EXPO VIDEO, a selection of dynamic and cutting-edge film, video and new media works by artists curated by Dean Otto, Assistant Curator of Film/Video at Minneapolis’s Walker Art Center.
EXPO CHICAGO, in conjunction with Columbia College Chicago, presents EXPO VIDEO, a selection of dynamic and cutting-edge film, video and new media works by artists selected from the 120 international exhibiting galleries at the 2013 exposition. Curated by Dean Otto, Program Manager for the Film/Video Department at Minneapolis’s Walker Art Center, EXPO VIDEO will also present one piece created by a Columbia College student or recent graduate for inclusion in the innovative program. EXPO VIDEO will be located on the main floor of the exposition at three curated viewing stations designed by Studio Gang Architects.
Highlights from the special exhibition program include:
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) presents a special exhibition exemplifying the school’s educational philosophy built upon an interdisciplinary approach to art and design. Curated by Chicago-born SAIC alumna Amanda Ross-Ho, each department head at SAIC will nominate students for inclusion in the exhibit. Spanning the Painting and Drawing, Sculpture, Photography, Performance, and Film, Video, New Media, and Animation departments, among others, the exhibit will feature some of the most talented young artists producing work in Chicago today.
Human Rights Watch (HRW), in partnership with Rhona Hoffman Gallery, will display Jenny Holzer‘s “Inflammatory Essays” along with a Human Rights Watch poster, “Tyranny has a Witness,” echoing the mission of HRW’s dedication to defending and protecting human rights.
Critic, painter and co-curator of the 2014 Whitney Biennial Michelle Grabner will program the Hyde Park Art Center‘s exhibition at EXPO CHICAGO with selections from their upcoming show, A Study in Midwest Appropriation. This group exhibition, featuring the work of Conrad Bakker, John Riepenhoff, David Robbins, Oli Watt, Pedro Velez and more, surveys the defining trait of appropriation in contemporary art from the heartland.
Continuing their partnership with EXPO CHICAGO, The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) returns to the fair to present the work of Seattle-based artist Vaughn Bell. Bell’s three-piece installation creates interactive projects and immersive environments that relate to nature, conservation and ownership.
The Andy Warhol Museum, in partnership with KIWI Arts Group, presents a special exhibition of ”William John Kennedy: The Warhol Museum Edition“ at EXPO CHICAGO. The box set (in an edition of 50) features five signed and numbered photographs of Andy Warhol in 1964 just prior to the height of his popularity during the Silver Factory era. Always wanting to visit Chicago but never making the trip, this special exhibition also serves as a posthumus celebration of Warhol’s connections to the city.
The Museum of Contemporary Photography (MoCP) at Columbia College Chicago presents a special video installation by LaToya Ruby Frazier as an extension of the Museum’s exhibition Backstory: LaToya Ruby Frazier, Ron Jude and Guillaume Simoneau. Blurring the boundaries between the personal and the collective, Frazier uses her own family’s history to reveal both complex intergenerational struggles and social inequality.
Independent Curators International (ICI) will showcase two new 2013 editions by Marina Abramović and Stephen J. Kaltenbach, both inspired by ICI’s latest iteration of an ongoing exhibition by Hans Ulrich Obrist’s, ”do it,” of which they mark the 20th anniversary.
The Contemporary Art Museum (CAM) St. Louis presents “Feedback 2,” a collaborative installation capable of producing an infinite number of auditory and visual outcomes that respond to viewers passing through, projected on video monitors within the booth, created by Brett Williams and Kevin Harris.
Other special exhibitions include ACRE, Aperture Foundation, Artadia, Artspace, Bad at Sports, Balloon Contemporary, BOLT Residency, The Conservation Center, HATCH Projects, Hirsch Books, International Sculpture Center, Laumeier Sculpture Park, the University of Chicago, the West Collection and Whitechapel Gallery.
