This coming winter, UNPAINTED will become Munich’s first-ever fair for new media art. The content and presentation of the fair presents new pathways that reflects the digital world of the 21st century from an artistic perspective.

UNPAINTED invites all established galleries that present media art to apply for stands up to 80 square meters in the Great Galleries section. For young galleries that have not been on the market longer than five years, there is a special offer—with a special project, they can apply in the Youngish section for a 20-square-meter stand. “If you read the names of the galleries that have already applied for a stand, it is clear that the international art world is ready for a new fair like UNPAINTED,” says Annette Doms, Director of the UNPAINTED media art fair. “The deadline for participants ends on 21 October. In November, we will finally be able to name all the exhibitors and announce the exhibition program.”

Another novelty that separates UNPAINTED from other art fairs—artists without access to a gallery may apply for a specially curated section called Lab3.0, where they get the opportunity to obtain a supported berth close to the participating young and renowned galleries. From there, they can sell their work directly to collectors and visitors and invite the local galleries to explore. As a curator for Lab3.0, the organizers of UNPAINTED have been fortunate to get the Chinese multimedia artist Li Zhenhua, well-known as a project manager and producer of Synthetic Time: Media Art China, 2008, in NAMOC (National Art Museum of China), as well as curator of the 3rd Nanjing Triennial. Annette Doms explains the idea for Lab3.0: “For an art fair this is new terrain, but when it comes to digital art it’s a necessary step. Many new media artists are not currently represented by galleries and therefore have limited opportunities to present their work to an international art audience. Lab3.0 would like to start right there and thus provide greater limelight for the unknown talents of new media art, as well as give galleries an opportunity to discover new artists.”

The central event location is the historic Postpalast in Munich. The complex of buildings of the former parcel delivery office was built in 1926. With its unusual architecture and former existence as a hub for goods and communications, it is an ideal environment for the presentation and discovery of new art forms.

Heading out from there, a network of further offerings from the fair are covered by a walking tour within Munich’s bustling city centre. Additional concerts, symposia, workshops and exhibitions are also planned. The program includes discussions and lectures on the topics “The digitalization of everyday life,” “How to collect media art?” and “The preservation and presentation of new media.”

The panelists so far are Rafaël Rozendaal (Internet artist, New York, Amsterdam), Li Zhenhua (media curator, Shanghai), Dr. Renate Buschmann (Director of imai – inter media art institute, Düsseldorf), Thomas Girst (BMW, Munich), Alain Servais (Collector of media art, Brussels), Wolf Lieser (pioneer and specialist of digital art, Gallery [DAM]), Peter Weibel (curator, media theorist, Director of ZKM Karlsruhe), Klaus vom Bruch (media art professor, Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Munich).

A detailed program overview will be published in the weeks before the fair.
