The Amsterdam Light Festival invites artists, designers, engineers and architects to submit ideas for art works to be staged at the festival’s 2014–2015 edition. The third edition of the Amsterdam Light Festival will take place in the city centre of Amsterdam in December 2014 and January 2015. The deadline for submissions is 1 March 2014.

More information about the submission requirements can be found on our website.

Theme: A Bright City
We celebrate the life in the city and will showcase art works that offer a new and unexpected view on Amsterdam, its history, its architecture, its entrepreneurial spirit, its people and its future.

Our theme this year is A Bright City, calling for artworks that are a statement on today’s metropolis, our urban lifestyle, and the incredible relevance of cities to the advancement of human culture. Cities are places where people broaden their mind and learn from the past as well as about the future.

This edition, the festival will further differentiate its two exhibitions of art in public space: the Water Colors boat tour and the Illuminade city walk. Water Colors is comprised of larger, colorful, monumental works. Illuminade offers a platform for young talent, experimentation, interaction and mixed forms of art and digital technology.

The Water Colors boat tour is a unique concept for an exhibition in public space. Presentations of light art are to be experienced from the water, travelling in canal boats. This requires artists to consider that visitors are floating by in groups and at slow speed, and sometimes at a distance.

Open to all
With the call for concepts, the festival invites anyone to submit individual interpretations of the theme A Bright City.

“We hope to receive proposals for artworks that comment on the metropolis of today as a place to work and live, and stress the importance of cities in our cultural, artistic and economic advancement. Cities are places where people broaden their thoughts and ideas, and where curiosity is rewarded.”
–Rogier van der Heide, Artistic Director of the Amsterdam Light Festival

International jury
A renowned panel of judges will select the winning proposals. The jury consists of Rogier van der Heide (Artistic Director, Amsterdam Light Festival, Chief Design Officer of Philips Lighting), Marloes Krijnen (Director, Foam), Jennifer Keesmaat (Chief Urban Planner, Toronto), Cyril Zammit (Director, Dubai Design Days) and Sarah Douglas (Creative Director, Wallpaper Magazine). The 30 selected artworks will be announced on April 15.

About the Festival
Each winter, the historic city centre of Amsterdam forms a scenic backdrop for the Amsterdam Light Festival. The festival stages light art and, to a lesser extent, video mapping and projection by contemporary international artists in the public space. The festival brings light to the longest nights of the year and enlightens the visitors with a different and unexpected view on the city. Our target for the upcoming festival is to attract 750,000 visitors.

Many of the well known cultural institutions of Amsterdam are participating in the festival, including Hermitage Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam Museum, de Appel arts centre, Scheepvaartmuseum, the Amsterdam Music Theatre and others.
