The French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) is thrilled to present award-winning multimedia artist Jessica Sofia Mitrani’s award-winning installation Headpieces for Peace as part of Fashion at FIAF, a special program celebrating fashion in March.
Originally commissioned by the fashion collective threeASFOUR for their exhibition Insalaam Inshalom, shown in Tel Aviv in 2011, the installation presents a wry examination of fashion and feminism, two themes central to Mitrani’s work.
Winner of the 2012 A Shaded View on Fashion Film (ASVOFF) Grand Prix, this short video confronts serious themes in a quirky and humorous way.
For the first time in New York, see this video along with the 11 headpieces made from printed fabric designed by threeASFOUR.
Jessica Sofia Mitrani’s Headpieces for Peace will also be on view Friday, March 14 from 6 to 7:30pm for a special weekend of events celebrating the convergence of film, art, and fashion.

In The Pop-Up [Ethical] Sweatshop presented by What I Live By (WILBy), shoppers are invited to articulate their worldviews through their consumption choices. Featuring a live production where “Made-in-USA” tote bags are constructed by New York-based designers Audrey Louise Reynolds (ALR Dying) and Mona Kowalska (A Detacher), this shop promotes the greatest luxury item of all: thoughtfulness.
Don’t need another tote bag? Get your favorite tote stamped with What I Live By, or bring in your extra totes to recycle.

In honor of acclaimed fashion photographer and filmmaker Jerry Schatzberg, FIAF and ASVOFF in partnership with Kering are thrilled to present a special screening of Schatzberg’s debut feature. Puzzle of a Downfall Child stars Faye Dunaway as Lou Andreas Sand, a former fashion model who retreats to her beach house after a mental breakdown. Schatzberg had been inspired by a long conversation with his friend, the top model Anne Saint Marie, who was in the depths of depression after the decline of her own career as a model. The film served as a watershed moment for Schatzberg, who then put aside his work in fashion photography to pursue a lifelong career in cinema. Puzzle of a Downfall Child was nominated for the 1971 Golden Globe for Best Actress. Thirty years later it opened the Cannes Film Festival, where organizers paid homage to the director.
Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with director Jerry Schatzberg and fashion critic Diane Pernet.
