Globally acclaimed artist and photographer Edward Burtynsky and award-winning documentarian Jennifer Baichwal (The True Meaning of Pictures) present Watermark. The film brings together diverse stories from around the globe about our relationship with water: how we are drawn to it, what we learn from it, how we use it, and the consequences of that use. In Watermark, the viewer is immersed in a magnificent force of nature that we all too often take for granted—until it’s gone. Watermark was recently acclaimed as “Best Canadian Film of 2013″ by the Toronto Film Critics and winner of the Canadian Screen Award for Best Documentary Film.
Burtynsky’s focus on water began in California, on assignment for National Geographic in 2008. Since then, he has portrayed water in its various forms as “a victim, a partner, a protagonist, a lure, a source, an end, a threat and a pleasure.” Several threads in the film focus on water issues in California, which is particularly relevant today in the drought ravaged state.
