Ceci n’est pas… is a project initiated by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States in collaboration with the Institut Français, with the support of the Alliance Française of Los Angeles, the French Ministry of Culture and Communication and the participation of over thirty cultural institutions and over one hundred artists from the emerging to the world-renowned such as John Baldessari, Jim Shaw and Xavier Veilhan.
Since its launching at the end of 2012, Ceci n’est pas… has brought to the fore the sometimes silent and yet extremely powerful cooperations that unite French and American creation. Following in the tradition of the transatlantic dialogue that led to a radical turn in art with such seminal figures as Marcel Duchamp or later Nikki de Saint Phalle or Yves Klein, Ceci n’est pas… seeks to give evidence to this continued and renewed dialogue.
Now archived in a documentary, Ceci n’est pas… showcases the vitality of these relationships and artistic experiments. The film invites viewers to discover the wide array of events and artworks created by this multi-faceted and multi-disciplinary 5-month umbrella event.

Ceci n’est pas… goes beyond a one-time experience and is proud to bring into one transcultural and cross media perspective the best of today’s visual arts from France and Los Angeles. In this perspective, Ceci n’est pas… is very excited to partner once again with Paris Photo Los Angeles and to bring French speakers to Sound and Vision – The Conversations series, such as Agnès Sire, Director of Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, or artist Jean-Luc Moulène, who will be sharing the stage with new MoCA director Philippe Vergne.
Representing the French art scene at the Paramount studios are seven galleries from Paris (Christophe Gaillard, De Roussan, La Galerie Particulière, Les Filles du Calvaire, Librairie 213, Loevenbruck, Magnin-A, Melanie Rio, Piece unique); two Los Angeles-based French galleries, François Ghebaly and M+B; and Véronique Bourgoin, who is bringing her Vrai ou Faux performance and her film Normadrine to LA.
Ceci n’est pas… is proud to be part of this exciting new edition of Paris Photo LA, which showcases the vitality of the French scene, bringing to the public the products of the ongoing cross-pollination of French and Southern Californian culture across a range of traditional and cutting edge medias.
