SUMMA Contemporary Art Fair sets a new date for contemporary art and its related market this September 18–21, following a first edition held successfully in 2013, and once again located within the Matadero, one of the most visited spaces on the Madrid scene.
This second edition boasts the artistic direction of the curators Eva González-Sancho and Juan de Nieves.
Conceived as a fair with an international vocation, in this edition SUMMA 2014 will pay special attention to Spanish art generated both within and outside our borders, and will work on fostering a new model of fair, which knows how to respond to the demands of a collector eager to know the new values of art, and keen to contribute to a change in the relationships and habitual practices of acquisition of work and dealing with galleries.
SUMMA 2014 will present a selection of around 75 galleries, both national and international, which will exhibit works both of renowned artists and of new talent.
In addition to the General Programme, Summa 2014 includes two curated itineraries (Tranversal) within the exceptional setting of Nave 16 of the Matadero, which in turn boasts an exquisite architectural intervention (Nieto & Sobejano). Moreover it will once again include the UP section, dedicated to galleries less than five years old, and the MadridFoto section, centered on galleries whose focus is on photography.
As in its previous edition, SUMMA 2014 will carry out a program for collectors sponsored by Fundación Banco Santander. In addition to the exhibitors, SUMMA 2014 invites visitors to the fair to take part in a series of discussions, debates and round-table forums sponsored by Fundación Banco Sabadell. Relevant speakers will explore current themes in the panorama relating to both the production and trade of contemporary art and architecture, and the role played by cultural policies by which we refer to the support for the development of the visual arts.

Eva González-Sancho is a curator. She was director and curator at FRAC Bourgogne (Dijon, France) from 2003 to 2011 and at Etablissement d’en Face projects (Brussels) from 1998 to 2003, as well as lecturing in the History of Exhibitions at Metz University from 2001 to 2004. She is responsible for over 50 exhibitions mainly showcasing new art production (Leblon, Almarcegui, Åsdam, Cabrita Reis, Dahlberg, McBride, García, Buckingham etc).
Her curatorial interests are often concerned with reflections on public space as well as issues of relations with language through projects that lead the spectator to a wider questioning of the conditions and forms of self-perception and a growing awareness of specific places and contexts, defining her focus on ‘Non-Authoritarian’ art practices.
Among her recent projects, she was co-curator of LIAF 2013 (Lofoten, Norway); was appointed Director of MUSAC (Spain) in 2013 and is currently working on a major show of Lars Laumann for Kunstnernes Hus.
Juan de Nieves is a curator. From 1994 to 1998, he was a curator at CGAC in Santiago de Compostela, and between 1999 and 2005 curator for EACC (Castelló, Spain). Between 2005 and 2009 he was the Director of EACC, where he developed a program focused on the production of site-specific pieces related to their urban and socio-cultural contexts (Buren, Ventura, Vergara, Knight, Miralda, among others), as well as programming exhibitions that explored the language of video and cinema (Sharits, Ottinger) along with artist and filmmaker workshops and hugely successful public arts projects.
In 2013 he was appointed Director of Rupert in Vilnius, Lithuania.
As an independent curator, he has curated exhibitions of Rosa Barba, Valcárcel Medina, Dora García, Angel Vergara and Jorge Barbi, etc.
De Nieves brings nearly 20 years of experience producing innovative curatorial projects that focus on the creation and circulation of contemporary art in both the local and global arena.
