Bonhams will host The Contemporary Angolan Art Auction, with seven superb lots by Angola’s leading innovative contemporary artists on Monday 19 May at 7:15pm at 101 New Bond Street.

This small but very fine collection of paintings, photographs and sculptures is by some of Angola’s outstanding talents—Paulo Kapela, Antonio Ole, Francisco Vidal, Nelo Teixeira, Delio Jasse, Binelde Hycran and Yonamine Miguel. Bonhams will not charge any vendor’s commission or buyer’s premium on these lots and all proceeds of the sale will go directly to the LOGOS Project in Luanda.

One of Africa’s major oil producers, Angola is striving to tackle the physical, social and political legacy of a 27-year civil war that ravaged the country after independence. Angola has made a phenomenal leap in the last decade with the rebuilding of its infrastructure as the buoyant oil export market has spurred economic growth and fuelled a reconstruction boom. Other factors, such as art, literature and human sciences, have been also been important contributors to the Angolan Renaissance.

Angola’s artistic accomplishments have been highlighted with Edson Chagas’s Luanda Encyclopedic City winning the Leone d’Oro at 2013 Venice Biennale, considered the most prestigious event of the cultural and artistic world. A burgeoning crop of talented contemporary artists are now expressing their cultural reflections and inspirations, giving form to their ideas and providing a fertile interchange between Angola and the rest of the world.

Angola is working hard to promote artistic creation and the conservation of her identity, which encompasses multiple vibrant and diverse influences. Established private institutions such as Banco Privado Atlantico amongst others, have all demonstrated their dedication and commitment to the arts and artists.

The LOGOS Project is the social responsibility programme of Banco Privado Atlantico and is aimed at developing projects of a social nature to support the youth of Angola. The programme endeavours to create better environments where young people can interact and learn values that will provide them with the necessary tools to make positive choices in their lives.

Bonhams is delighted to join forces with Banco Privado Atlantico, e.studio and Costa Lopes arq. and participate in the nurturing of cultural production in Angola. Minister of Culture of the Republic of Angola Rosa Cruz e Silva describes Angolan art as an aesthetic expression based on exchanges and symbolic dialogues from the past being constantly revisited reorganized and updated.

Bonhams is pleased to be involved in such a distinguished Angolan event which affirms our leading position in presenting international artworks to a global audience. Bonhams remains at the forefront of the African art market, and is the only international auction house with dedicated sales for African modern and contemporary art.
