Gunter Damisch’s current exhibition Survey and Extract at the GALERIE HILGER NEXT Wien 10 presents a selection of new paintings, works on paper, sculptures and casts.
The title of the solo show refers to the phenomenon relating to the works of Damisch to show both large, panoramic connections and simultaneously a profusion of details via a kind of “zoom effect.” Habitats are presented as complex and multipartite constructs.
In recent years, Gunter Damisch has increasingly utilized the principle and technical possibilities of collage and assemblage in his work. Accordingly, his paintings establish correlations between printed and painterly elements.
Gunter Damisch (b. 1958, Steyr) began his career in the first half of the 1980s when exhibiting in the vicinity of the “New Wild Painting” movement represented by the Galerie Ariadne while also being part of the group of young artists, along with Herbert Brandl, Gerwald Rockenschaub, Otto Zitko, Josef Danner and Hubert Scheibl, who aimed at progressing figurative painting as open pictorial forms deploying the language of material and as the succeeding generation of the Neuen Wilden (“New Wild Ones”) swiftly attained wide recognition. His work has been honoured with numerous awards. He studied with Max Melcher and Arnulf Rainer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he has been holding a professorship since 1992. Gunter Damisch lives and works in Vienna and Freidegg.
