In an unprecedented show of support from the creative community, over 180 international artists have donated works to Closer to Gaza, a benefit auction to raise money for urgently needed medical aid and supplies in Gaza.
These artists have come together in a demonstration of their support of the people of Gaza and as a stance against the ongoing occupation of the Palestinian Territories. The works sold will benefit Physicians for Human Rights—Israel and the Palestinian Medical Relief Society, two NGOs working to promote and protect the right to health of Palestinians. The current situation in Gaza remains dire: The World Health Organization warns of an unfolding health and humanitarian disaster due to Protective Edge, the Israeli military operation launched on July 8 into the Gaza strip. This offensive has resulted in widespread destruction and a high number of civilian casualties. According to the WHO (August 28): 2,130 Palestinians have been killed, with an additional estimated 11,066 injured Palestinians including 3,374 children, 1,970 women and 410 elderly people. To date in Gaza at least 17 hospitals and 50 public health clinics (out of 97 total) have been bombed, damaged, or closed. There are over 290,000 displaced persons.
The works will be available for bidding online starting on September 10 on Paddle8, and will be on display at Kuehlhaus Berlin from September 17 to 21, parallel to Berlin Art Week. Bidding will also be possible at Kuelhaus via interactive digital kiosks. Closer to Gaza was initiated by Berlin-based artists Dani Gal and Assaf Gruber in collaboration with L40 – Verein zur Förderung von Kunst und Kultur am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz e.V with the support of Kuehlhaus Berlin.
