Parisian Laundry is pleased to launch our fall season with the opening of Stations, People, Eat, Drink, a group exhibition featuring works by Dean Baldwin, Annie Descôteaux, Radamés ‘Juni’ Figueroa and Bartek Komorowski.
Baldwin’s La table de la Méduse, commissioned for the Biennale de Sculpture in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli this past summer, serves as the anchor of the show. As a social intervention where viewers interact with one another in a convivial and generous manner, each engagement adds to and reconfigures the still life the artwork has become, in an ongoing evolution of alterations spurred by every social act of eating and drinking.
Descôteaux’s perfectly executed collages offer a micro view of everyday elements. Not unlike playing with a dollhouse, we shrink to the size of her finely cut hamburgers, banana peels and plants, envisioning an interaction with these elements that recalls the absurd in our encounters with these quotidian objects to which we continually return.
Fijueroa’s playful sculptures transform everyday day utilitarian objects into readymades with renewed domestic purpose. A lone shoe becomes a planter, and plastic buckets and fresh fruit are built into electrically charged punchbowls.
Komorowski, otherwise known as Szef Bartek, seeks to improve our quality of life. His demonstrative videos serve as directives into a world of culinary “how-tos” guiding us towards what to eat, how to eat and where to eat, rules perfected by research and development at Szef’s official headquarters.
Special invitation: François Rochon presents David Simpson
Artist reception with the artist in attendance: October 4, 3–6pm
Montreal collector François Rochon presents the work of California-based abstract painter David Simpson on the second floor of the gallery. Simpson’s striking jewel-like paintings will benefit from the natural light of our vast windows in an intimate and special exhibition premiere of his works in Canada.
