Art Metropole invites you to join us for our 40th anniversary! On October 26, 1974, General Idea opened shop in a former art supply store at 241 Yonge Street, Toronto. Appropriating the original name and logo of the building, they conceived Art Metropole as an artist-run archive and distribution centre, in an attempt to make art available to a broad constituency. 40 years and a few moves later, Art Metropole is one of Canada’s leading not‐for-profits, with a continued focus on the production, dissemination and presentation of artist-initiated publication across various media and contexts. Our goal for this once-in-a-lifetime benefit event is to narrate the history of Art Metropole, while looking to our future as an organization.
