Spring 2015 in Canadian Art and Canadian Art‘s tablet edition: Quebec in focus

In advance of their debut at the Canada Pavilion in Venice this May, Quebec City art pranksters BGL lead contributing editor Isa Tousignant on a tour through their kitsch-fuelled practice, all the way from the local dépanneur to the Giardini.

The Biennale de Montréal is a newly revamped star-making machine with international ambitions. Contributing editor Nancy Tousley weighs in on the latest edition, L’avenir (looking forward), alongside a portrait series by Roger Lemoyne of some of its breakaway artists.

Fresh from residencies in New York and Paris, Montreal sculptor Tricia Middleton tells critic Chris Hampton how the happenstance poetics of everyday life can be transformed into objects of beauty and decay.

Award-winning photographer Benoit Aquin records sites of natural and manmade disasters, from Haiti to Lac-Mégantic, as states of existence—in which extreme devastation gives way to resilience. Critic Olivier Asselin reports.

French curator Caroline Andrieux saved Montreal’s historic Darling Foundry from the wrecking ball and turned it into one of Canada’s premier exhibition spaces and residency programs, remaking an art scene along the way. Critic Bryne McLaughlin reports.

Plus: Emily Carr at Dulwich Picture Gallery in London and exhibition reviews from Vancouver, Regina, Lethbridge, Toronto and Montreal.
