For the last 35 years ARCOmadrid has served as a nexus where art world encounters, the art market, and artistic discourse have all had a place. Fully aware of its role in reflecting the art of our time, ARCOmadrid has strived to support the Spanish contemporary art world, while at the same time participating in international art world circuits by inviting leading international curators to shape the fair’s contents throughout its history.

To mark the occasion of ARCOmadrid’s 35th anniversary, the fair will invite the leading galleries, institutions, art professionals and collectors who have participated over the past 35 years to return for this special edition of the fair. Titled Imagining Alternative Futures, ARCOmadrid 2016 will commemorate the art of the recent past while at the same time wholeheartedly embrace the art of the future.

The centerpiece of the ARCOmadrid 2016 will be the gallery selection, curated by María de Corral, in collaboration with Catalina Lozano and Aaron Moulton. 35 galleries from around the world will be invited to participate in this section, each with a two-artist booth that pairs two artists that represent the past and the future of the gallery.

In the words of the curators: “Over the past 35 years, ARCOmadrid has established itself as an important hub for the international contemporary art scene. This section will pay homage to this trajectory by bringing together relevant artists from different generations, opening up a dialogue that will show the diversity of artistic practice today.”

ARCOmadrid was one of the first art fairs to incorporate the visions and voices of art world professionals into its overall activities, and over the years the fair has become known as a key meeting place on the international circuit where critics, curators and museum directors are able to discuss projects and debate ideas. ARCOmadrid 2016 will continue these professional activities, inviting major art world figures from around the world to participate in the fair’s intense and wide-ranging programme of Professional Meetings and Forum.

ARCOmadrid 2016 will also see a return of its well-received Solo Projects Focus Latin America program, directed by Irene Hofmann and Lucía Sanromán, as well as of the Opening programme, curated by Juan Canela and Chris Sharp.

In keeping with ARCOmadrid’s long-standing policy, these curated programmes as well as the main section will emphasize booths presenting only one or two artists, thus offering collectors and fair visitors a unique opportunity for an in-depth look at some of the most up-to-date art being created at present.

ARCOmadrid 2016 will also present a new programme of invited private collectors and directors of museums and foundations who are expanding their collections, and aimed at facilitating the interaction between dealers and collectors during the course of the fair.

Applications for ARCOmadrid are open until July 3 at www.arco.ifema.es.
