Back to the Future, the section of Artissima devoted to rediscovering the artistic avant-garde of the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, focuses this year exclusively on the period 1975–85.
While previous editions of Back to the Future have explored the years 1960–89 as an extensive historical reference to the art produced today, in 2015 the section will take an in-depth look at a narrower time span.
1975–85 was a transitional period that coincided with the end of a certain type of conceptualism and the explosion of painting, yet comprised multiple possibilities of expression. This decade was a laboratory for the radicalisation of earlier artistic approaches, the development of countercultural models, appropriation and the rethinking of the very structures for creating and experiencing works of art. Furthermore, during those years gender became a fundamental issue, performers’ physical presence was taken to extremes, and film, photography and video art intersected in new ways with the legacies of conceptualism. Artists embraced the complexities of politics, the role of painting was reconsidered and design and display became fields of poetic action.
This period of transformation was characterised not by a single and univocal creative revolution, but by a series of different artistic passages which explored a past that speaks of the present from a renewed standpoint.
The curators of Back to the Future 2015 are: Eva Fabbris (coordinator), independent curator, Milan; João Fernandes, deputy director, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofìa, Madrid; Elena Filipovic, director, Kunsthalle Basel; and Beatrix Ruf, director, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.
Back to the Future is now accepting applications for monographic presentations. Proposed artists’ works should be dated between 1975 and 1985. Deadline for submission is May 15. For all other applications at Artissima click here.
