Science fiction is today’s best realism.
It is J. G. Ballard’s thought that provided the framework/impulse for this year’s curated by_vienna to deal with the artistic, political and economical present from the point of an already commenced future. International curators take on this matter by arranging exhibitions in Vienna’s leading galleries of contemporary art.
Based on the eponymous essay “Tomorrow Today” by philosopher Armen Avanessian, the participating curators and galleries examine the interface between art and capital and reflect on future as well as already existing alternative models of art and economy.
Armen Avanessian studied philosophy and political science in Vienna and Paris and literary criticism in Bielefeld. Following his dissertation, he worked as a journalist and editor in publishing as well as in the academic sector. In addition, he has held several visiting professor and lectureship positions at art academies and universities in the US, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland and Austria. Avanessian is the founder of the research platform www.spekulative-poetik.de and editor-in-chief at publishing house MERVE Verlag.
