Three days, 45 exhibitions, more than 50 artists and the most important cultural institutions of the city—all together, celebrating a party which will open up the city to the contemporary art. Running September 10 to 12, Apertura Madrid Gallery Weekend is an invitation to explore the city in a different way, and to discover the latest from the current creation.
For the last six years, Apertura Madrid Gallery Weekend is an event which marks the beginning of the year in September. It is the weekend of the inauguration of more than 40 art galleries, all at once, extending their opening hours and planning special activities. In parallel, with the cooperation of institutions (Museo Reina Sofía, Museo Thyssen, Museo ABC, Museo Lázaro Galdiano, Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo), a wide activity programme is developed to bring the latest creations to the general public.
The city becomes a large exhibition hall of contemporary art, where Spanish art is discovered through new-generation artists such as Germán Gómez (Galería Fernando Pradilla), Philipp Fröhlich (Galería Juana de Aizpuru), Leonor Rivas (Galería Marta Cervera), Santiago Giralda (Galería Moisés Pérez de Albéniz), Santiago Ydáñez (La New Gallery), and Aggtelek (Galería Ponce+Robles), all living alongside acclaimed names like Soledad Sevilla (Galería Fernández-Braso) and Luis Gordillo (Galería Marlborough). Of course, there is also a place for Masters of 20th century Art History, such as Pablo Picasso (Galería Guillermo de Osma), Yves Klein (Galería Cayón), and Josef Albers (Galería Pilar Serra).
Apertura Madrid Gallery Weekend is a tour through all disciplines: installation—UBIK (Galería Sabrina Amrani); painting—Alberto Pina (Galería Utopia Parkway); photography—Flor Garduño (Galería Blanca Berlín); sculpture—Aleksandar Duravcevic (Galería Arnes y Röpke ), and so on.
Additionally, there is space for international contemporary art within the showrooms of this particular “museum.” Prominent figures, such as Elmgreen & Dragset (Galería Helga de Alvear), Otto Zitko (Galería Heinrich Erhardt), Alexandre Arrechea (Galería Casado Santapau) and Mathias Goeritz (Galería La Caja Negra), among other top names, are part of the Madrid galleries’ programme.
Apertura Madrid Gallery Weekend is a great art event which brings collectors, experts and professionals to our city from all over the world. Its purpose: to bring the contemporary creation closer to the public.
ARCOmadrid and Apertura
Among the parallel activities of Apertura Madrid Gallery Weekend is the ARCO Gallerywalk, organized in collaboration with the Madrid fair. Designed to bring contemporary art closer to the public, the walk is guided by experts and is free, allowing visitors to tour the galleries and discover artists at the hands of professionals in the art world.
Arte_Madrid
This contemporary art event is organized by the art gallery association Arte_Madrid, which currently gathers 45 members. These galleries are regularly involved in the most prestigious international fairs, such as Art Basel, Frieze, The Armory Show, FIAC, Artissima, ArtBo, and SP Arte, where they act as ambassadors of Spanish art within the international artistic scene.
Madrid is also the capital of contemporary art in Spain. 50% of Spanish galleries belonging to the Spanish Consortium of Contemporary Art Galleries—the National Association Union—are based in the city. 45 spaces showing the best of contemporary art, besides the presence of top art centres, make Madrid a lively and exciting place to visit in September.
