200,000 USD awarded to artists, researchers and institutions in 12 countries through the 2015 Artis Grant Programs
Since 2004, the Artis Grant Programs have demonstrated significant support for international exhibitions and projects that advance innovative thinking about contemporary visual art from Israel. This year, made possible by a one million USD gift from an anonymous donor, Artis expanded its grant program from one to three new categories emphasizing innovation, experimentation, cultural exchange and artistic excellence: Project Grants, Exhibition Grants, and Travel and Research Grants. An open call on May 1, 2015 resulted in 252 letters of interest stemming from 29 countries and six continents.
Yael Reinharz, Executive Director of Artis, says, “Artis grants are intended to give a substantial platform to artistic voices both within Israel and internationally and within Israel. We are proud to build on our legacy of grants of $1.25 million to over 200 landmark exhibitions and projects in 20 countries with more direct support for artists, exhibitions and international exchange. We are grateful to our anonymous donor, whose $1 million gift will enable Artis to sustain these grants for the next three years.”
2015 marks a milestone in Artis’ history; the largest single year of grantmaking to date. Funds were awarded to 12 international exhibitions, 11 individual artists working in Israel, and three international arts professionals to conduct research in Israel. Grants were awarded in 12 countries across five continents. Jury members included Roy Brand, Professor of Philosophy at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design; Rita Kersting, Curator of Contemporary Art at The Israel Museum; and Jonathan Neil, Director of The Center for Management in the Creative Industries of Claremont Graduate University and Artis research trip alum.
The chosen proposals demonstrated a high degree of ambition and potential for long-term outcomes and impact, reflecting Artis’ support for artistic excellence, international art discourse, and ongoing cultural exchange. The 200,000 USD of support for exhibitions, research, and artist projects make up the largest part of Artis’ annual funding, which includes an additional 50,000 USD annually for scholarships and responsive grantmaking.
