From April 7 to 10, the pavilions of fieramilanocity will welcome 154 international galleries representing a wide selection of different positions in the fields of modern and contemporary art and limited-edition design from 16 countries.

A new feature of this 21st edition is the Decades section, which with its nine galleries offers an itinerary through the 20th century decade by decade.

Decades joins the four sections that have been parts of miart since 2013: Established, with 99 exhibitors—subdivided into the subsections Master, for galleries presenting historically acclaimed artists, and Contemporary, for galleries specializing in contemporary work; Emergent, on 16 international galleries concentrating on the research of the younger generations, including 11 foreign galleries; THENnow, which features 8 pairs of galleries that join forces to trigger dialogue between one historic artist and one from a more recent generation; and, finally, Object, with a selection of 14 galleries active in the promotion of contemporary design objects created in limited editions and approached as works of art.

In continuity with the three previous editions, a new cycle of miartalks will accompany the three days when the fair is open to the public. Produced in collaboration with In Between Art Film—the production company for artists’ films and experimental video founded by Beatrice Bulgari—and with coordination by Ben Borthwick, artistic director of the Plymouth Arts Centre (Plymouth, UK), the new cycle of miartalks will be a platform of lectures, conversations and interviews involving over 40 outstanding international personalities including curators, artists, directors of museums and film festivals, collectors, filmmakers, choreographers and producers invited to explore the ongoing dialogue between the world of the visual arts and those of experimental cinema, music, video, theater and dance.

The range of prizes and acquisition funds connected with miart continues to expand. Alongside the Giampiero Cantoni Acquisition Fund of Fondazione Fiera Milano—which doubles this year, from 50,000 to 100,000 euro for the acquisition of works of modern and contemporary art that will contribute to form the collection of Fondazione Fiera Milano—there is also the return of the Emergent Prize—for the best emerging gallery—the Premio Rotary Club Milano Brera for contemporary art and young artists, and the Premio Herno, in collaboration with Herno SpA, which for the second year will be assigned to the booth with the best exhibition project.

Miart 2016 renews and increases the close collaboration launched in the latest editions with the many players operating in the city for the promotion and knowledge of art. Working with the City of Milan, miart leads the way during the contemporary art week, which will include a program of events, openings and special visiting hours involving public institutions, foundations and private galleries, throughout the period of the fair. A number of previews and events will mark every day of the art week, which will start with the 21st Milan Triennale—21st Century. Design After Design. The retrospective exhibition devoted to the experimental work of Studio Azzurro will open at Palazzo Reale, while HangarBicocca will host an immersive solo show by Carsten Höller. Furthermore, the Fondazione Carriero will inaugurate its second exhibition, this time focused on the works of Lucio Fontana and Leoncillo, and the new FM Center for Contemporary Art of Frigoriferi Milanesi will inaugurate its galleries with the ambitious group exhibition L’inarchiviabile. Special opening times at the Fondazione Prada will make possible to visit Goshka Macuga’s solo exhibition and L’Image volée, an inspiring group show curated by artist Thomas Demand. The many art lovers visiting Milan will also have the chance to see the exhibitions currently on view at Palazzo Reale—2050 and the shows on Umberto Boccioni and Symbolism—and the many other appointments that are reviving Milan’s role as a capital of contemporary creativity.

A key component of miart week and special project for the 2016 edition is Sarah Lucas – INNAMEMORABILIAMUMBUM, organized by Fondazione Nicola Trussardi and miart.

Sarah Lucas – INNAMEMORABILIAMUMBUM is a special project curated by Massimiliano Gioni and Vincenzo de Bellis, conceived for the extraordinary setting of the Albergo Diurno Venezia baths and produced in collaboration with FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano and the City of Milan. On Friday, April 8, Saturday, April 9 and Sunday, April 10, this temple of beauty and personal care designed in the early 1920s by architect Piero Portaluppi will be brought to life by sculptures, installations, sound works and other projects, for three days of exhibitions, performances and live happenings centered on the theme of the body, its depiction, its history, and the stereotypes in which it is frequently cloaked. Sarah Lucas will create a site-specific work designed for the Albergo Diurno Venezia, which will also feature sound installations and performances: on Saturday, April 9, an evening with music by artist and musician Julian Simmons, and on the evening of Sunday, April 10, a screening of the English artist’s “home movies.”
