This year’s Frieze Talks New York presents a series of conversations and debates with leading figures from contemporary art, design, music, technology and more, to tackle questions like: What place does a poet occupy in the world of visual art? Is expertise in art history necessary for curators? And can design make us more aware as citizens?
On Thursday, May 5, MoMA’s Paola Antonelli speaks with Stephanie Hankey of Tactical Technology Collective about the roles design and technology can play in aiding citizens and activists. Legendary downtown figure and influential poet Eileen Myles, who recently re-issued her cult classic Chelsea Girls, talks about the entangled relationships between poetry and art, poets and artists.
On Friday, May 6, “Haunted by What” brings together frieze co-editor Dan Fox with Turner Prize-winning British artist Mark Leckey to discuss the enchanted realm of technology. At 4pm, MCA Chicago curator Omar Kholeif chairs a panel about the potential of the digital to animate our bodies—real and virtual, mainstream and marginal.
Saturday, May 7 features “On Hating On…,” a unique conversation between acclaimed novelist and poet Ben Lerner and critic and art-historian Hal Foster, drawing on themes from Foster’s latest book, Bad News Days: Art, Criticism and Emergency and in anticipation of Lerner’s forthcoming The Hatred of Poetry. At 4pm artists Thomas Demand, Oliver Laric, and Stephanie Syjuco, join writer Joanne McNeil on a panel about the fate of copyright, authenticity, and “the original image.”
On Sunday, May 8, the Beirut-based artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan meets experimental musician Holly Herndon to talk about their shared investigations into sound, music, and surveillance. The program concludes in the afternoon with a spirited debate moderated by Jens Hoffmann, in which leading academics, curators, and artists, discuss art history’s role in exhibition making.
For the third year, the program is co–curated by Tom Eccles (Executive Director, Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, New York) and Christy Lange (frieze Associate Editor and Curator of Public Programming).
Talks take place daily at 12pm and 4pm at the on-site auditorium at Frieze New York. Access to Frieze Talks is included in all admission tickets, and seats can be reserved from 11am each day at the Talks Desk outside the auditorium.
