Following the exceptional 35th anniversary edition of ARCOmadrid which marked an unprecedented event in both its form and its contents, ARCOmadrid 2017 (February 22 to 26) will readapt by reducing the number of galleries, tocelebrate a fair focused on qualityand the discovery of new contentsof interest to collectors and professionals. In addition, its relationship with Latin America, one of the most highly rated aspects of the fair, will also be fostered.
Argentina will be the Guest Country at the next edition, allowing for one of the most active art contexts on the continent to be discovered, its excellent artists analysed and an understanding of the galleries, collecting, curating and critics in this country to be obtained. The galleries will be selected by Inés Katzenstein, independent curator and director of the art department of the UTDT, and a novel format will be presented with a new arrangement of the selected artists at the fair. Additionally, the independent curator Sonia Becce, will be responsible for putting together the programme in Madrid, reflecting Argentina’s visual and performing arts scene in various spaces in the city.
The Opening programme will once again focus on galleries in existence for a maximum of seven years, with a view to offering new information and aesthetic experiences. A section curated by Juan Canela, independent curator and co-director of BAR projects, and Stefanie Hessler, curator and co-director of andquestionmark, who joins ARCOmadrid to provide a view that combines her Nordic origins with her knowledge of the Latin American scene.
The interest awoken by the artist dialogues curated by María de Corral, Lorena Martínez de Corral and Catalina Lozano in 2016ensures the continuation of this format with the creation of the Dialogues programme. This section will enjoy the participation of around 15 galleries proposed by these curators with dialogue-based stands that will generate new contents and an in-depth presentation of the artists’ oeuvre. A programme that will also have a special bond with Latin America, through the participation of some Argentine artists selected by Inés Katzenstein in coordination with the curatorial team.
Madrid in February will be an exceptional opportunity to celebrate collecting in Latin Americawith the convergence of various projects such as the exhibition of the Isabel and Agustín Coppel collection, in the Fundación Banco Santander, the Hochschild collection, established in Lima, in the Sala Alcalá 31, to be joined by the exhibitions that Argentina in ARCOmadrid is preparing in the city, and the participation of distinguished collectors from the American continent in the Forum and Professional Meetings sessions.
