German art magazine BLAU launches the first international issue at Art Basel this year, with features on Félix Vallotton, French artist Marguerite Humeau and an extensive interview with Christopher Wool.
Since May 2015, BLAU has been published both as a cultural supplement to the German national newspaper DIE WELT and as a stand-alone art magazine. For the first time, BLAU is now being published as a special limited edition in English, which comprises select features from previous issues as well as new content commissioned exclusively for this issue.
Christopher Wool: We can talk but you can’t quote
“What’s a post-modern painter to do when his concepts and method begin to bore him? He may find sympathy in the discourse about the Pictures Generation; Wool has worked collaboratively with Richard Prince, and has befriended Jeff Koons. But he avoids any references to pop. Painting remains his profession—it’s just which kind that remains an open question.” After a considerable break from the art world, Christopher Wool sits down with editor-in-chief Cornelius Tittel to discuss his work both past and present.
Marguerite Humeau: High Definition Horror
With projects coming up at the Manifesta, the Moscow International Biennale for Young Art, and Palais de Tokyo, London-based artist Marguerite Humeau discusses her large-scale installations on the border between science and art, magic and technology and future and past.
A journey from Ticino to Istanbul: The world’s smallest museums
A selection of the most intimate museums in the world, handpicked by the directors of some of the largest institutions in the world: Udo Kittelmann (Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin), Sir Nicholas Serota (Tate, London), Max Hollein (Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco), Glenn D. Lowry (MoMA, New York), Marion Ackermann (Staatliche Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen), and Wim Pijbes (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam).
Also featuring:
Renowned writer Siri Hustvedt on Edvard Munch, Julian Barnes on Félix Vallotton, a visit to Tel Aviv’s budding cultural scene, a rediscovery of the delicate pastels of 18th century painter Jean-Étienne Liotard, an extensive interview with the director of the first institute for artist estates, a studio visit to painter James Brown in Mexico, and the essential summer exhibitions and auctions.
