Vienna’s leading contemporary art galleries will be presenting exhibitions about Diedrich Diederichsen’s essay “Meine Herkunft habe ich mir selbst ausgedacht” (My Origins? I Made Them Up)

What motivates artists to increasingly turn to role models and how do the associated tributes, references, citations and appropriations reveal themselves in the various works? Which continuities in terms of creating, but also breaking away from a role model are visible therefore? The eighth edition of the gallery festival curated by_vienna—organised by the Vienna Business Agency—traces questions like these. The theoretical foundation for curated by_vienna 2016 was created by the author, journalist and cultural critic Diedrich Diederichsen with his eponymous essay.

Individual and exciting interpretations of the festival theme by international curators
Vienna’s leading galleries have gained internationally renowned curators such as Maria Arooso, Bassam El Baroni, Michel Blancsubé, Cosima von Bonin, Dieter Buchhart & Anna Karina Hofbauer, Diana Campbell Betancourt, Jacopo Crivelli Visconti, Luigi Fassi, Giulia Ferracci, Krist Gruijthuijsen, Luis Pedro Miret Perez, Heike Munder, Kari Rittenbach, Edit Sasvári, Dirk Schönberger, Chris Sharp, Æsa Sigurjónsdótti, Bettina Steinbrügge and Susanne Titz to conceptualise exhibitions with their very personal approaches to the theme “Meine Herkunft habe ich mir selbst ausgedacht” (My Origins? I Made Them Up).

Bassam El Baroni deals with neurocentrism, the idea of a subjectivity that is focused on no one. Dirk Schönberger shows youth’s rooms, as a space, as a den, as the venue of the coming into being of a person. Heike Munder presents historical artistic strategies of resistance from Argentina, Brazil and Chile. Chaotica is the title of Luis Pedro Miret Perez’s exhibition for the Galerie Ernst Hilger. The works in the exhibition by Jacopo Crivelli Visconti revolve around the figure of the “negative reference” by putting what the artists detest, despise and reject, at the centre of discussion. Edit Sasvári reverses the principle tribute and lets older artists look at younger artists. Giulia Ferracci explores the notion of flowing time, and Diana Campbell Betancourt shows young artists from Bangladesh. Only in the Occident is the exhibition of Luigi Fassi at the Mario Mauroner Contemporary Art Vienna. Chris Sharp supertitles his show with As if in a foreign country; Æsa Sigurjónsdótti hers with Feckless and Hotheaded for the Galerie Raum mit Licht. Jana Sterbak is the focus of the exhibition at the Galerie Steinek. Dieter Buchhart and Anna Karina Hofbauer contemplate the phenomenon of Re-Coding. Krist Gruijthuijsen calls his exhibition The Me in Me for unttld contemporary with respect to the Icelandic artist Hreinn Friedfinnsson and his “secrets project”.

Symposium: On September 9, a symposium will be held at the Vienna Secession relating to the festival theme.

Focus tours
The free education program is also an essential element of the festival this year. A total of nine different tours are offered which provide new, easy access to the galleries and leave you wanting more. On Fridays and Saturdays, art experts give advice and input in selected gallery-clusters such as the Schleifmühlgasse, Eschenbachgasse or Seilerstätte. No other city in the world has a gallery district comparable with Vienna. The tours allow a deeper insight into the various additions to this year’s theme of curated by_vienna. They provide background information on the exhibitions, the galleries and the curators (registration is required: departure [at] wirtschaftsagentur.at)
