Art Mûr is pleased to announce the inauguration of Art Mûr Leipzig, a new satellite space in the Spinnerei, a cultural complex in Leipzig, Germany, and Cal lane’s debut European solo exhibition. This exciting venture marks the 20th anniversary of the gallery and it makes it among the first Canadian galleries to open a space abroad.

Cal Lane is an internationally acclaimed sculptor known for turning ordinary objects into lacy artworks. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and a Master degree in Fine Arts in sculpture from State University of New York. To date, her pieces stand alone in capturing a delicacy and intricacy quite apart from her closest contemporaries. Lane’s tapestries, cut into harsh and often preternaturally large steel and iron structures, are sensual, alluring and deeply effeminate. Having spent much of her early life in her mother’s hair salon in Vancouver Island, Lane soon became interested in exploring gender roles and conceptual art. Lane’s work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally including Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, France and the USA. Her work can be found in the permanent collections of Mudam Luxembourg, National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), Metropolitan Transportation Authority (New York).

Leipzig is a dynamic city known for its wonderful art scene. Rents are lower than in the German capital, which drew a lot of artists and galleries in the last 15 years. Art Mûr recognizes itself in the cultural effervescence of this city and embarks with optimism in this new venture. More than 125 years ago, Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei Aktiengesellschaft bought a plot of around ten hectares on the western outskirts of Leipzig. By 1907, it had become the biggest cotton-spinning mill in continental Europe. This fascinating factory town, including workers’ homes, allotment gardens as well as the factory kindergarten, has survived intact to this day and has been converted into more than a hundred artist studios as well as 14 galleries and exhibition spaces.
