The next edition of Talking Galleries Barcelona Symposium is approaching soon. Talking Galleries continues to maintain its profile as the leading international platform for gallerists instigating the debate and exchange of new trends specific to the art gallery sector. The importance of providing a common space in which fellow professionals can join and “talk” keeps being at the forefront of the founding principles of the project. 

With a two-day programme of debates, conversations and poignant reflections around gallerism, the Barcelona Symposium gathers together key art world figuresto discuss current issues, share experiences and rethink models relevant to the gallery practice. 

Barcelona Symposium 2017: programme preview

Day 1: Monday, January 16, will feature the opening keynote speech “The Global Gallery” with renowned gallerist Thaddaeus Ropac (Salzburg/Paris/London); the panel “The Evolving Fair Situation,” with Victoria Siddall, Director Frieze Fairs, Jean Frèmon, CEO, Galerie Lelong (Paris/New York), and Madrid gallerist Elba Benítez, which aims to offer an up-to-date insight into the fairs panorama; and the debate “Curated Gallery Programmes” to discuss the pertinence of curating within a gallery project, with Paris gallerist Jocelyn Wolff, Ossian Ward, Head of Contents at London’s Lisson Gallery, and Carles Guerra, director of Fundació Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona).    


Day 2: Tuesday, January 17, will consist of the panel dedicated to “The Strengths and Benefits of the Mid-Sized Gallery,” with Adam Sheffer, Cheim & Read (New York) and President of The Art Dealers Association of American (ADAA), NY art advisor Lisa SchiffMartin Aguilera, head of international sales atMendes Wood (Sao Paulo), and moderated by Financial Times art market columnist Melanie Gerlis; the talk titled “New Models in Collaboration: The Gallery and Auction House Relationship,” questioning how galleries and auction houses can work together gifting forward, with President of Pace Gallery Susan Dunne, François Chantala, Partner at The Thomas Dane Gallery (London), and Martin Klosterfelde, former gallerist and current Senior Director of Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s, with Jeffrey Boloten, Co-Founder & Managing Director of ArtInsight (London); and a novel reflection on “Social Media. Analysing your Investment,” with Ossian Ward and Jesse Ringham, Director of Digital, SUTTON. Finally, a closing session led by art market editor-at-large for The Art Newspaper Georgina Adam, who will wrap up the symposium together with Adam Sheffer
