Latitude: Platform for Brazilian Art Galleries Abroad will launch Galleries in Debate: Changes and Opportunities, an intensive two-day programme which will bring together commercial art dealers from Brazil and around the world to discuss key issues related to the sector, highlighting recent changes and opportunities that commercial galleries currently face. The programme for this event is co-organised by curator and cultural manager Benjamin Seroussi and will take place in São Paulo, at the Sala Itaú Cultural, March 27 and 28, 2017.
Comprising a series of lectures, debates and workshops, the programming for the event will relate to the results of Latitude’s 5th Sectorial Study on the Brazilian art market. After completing the study in late 2016, Latitude devised the plans for this new seminar to provide additional support for galleries in key areas. The seminar will bring together leading figures from Latitude member galleries and the international art world including Jonathan Neil (Sotheby’s Institute of Art), Jacqueline Uhlmann (Liste Art Fair), and Maria Baró (Baró Galeria).
Galleries in Debate Changes and Opportunities programme
The event’s first day will begin with a Keynote address by Jonathan Neil on the current and future role of art galleries. Shifra Shalit (Dvir Gallery) will then participate in a session on the current challenges faced by galleries and a discussion addressing those issues will follow, which will be moderated by Jaqueline Martins (Galeria Jaqueline Martins). In the afternoon, the debate will address the relationship between commercial galleries and the not-for-profit sector, featuring a panel with Thais Rivitti (Ateliê397). The first day will close with a discussion addressing an important challenge in the sector: private and public management, assisted by Gisele Jordão (3D3 Comunicação e Cultura), Ana Leticia Fialho (Ministry of Culture) and Christiano Braga (Apex-Brasil). Gisele Jordão and her cultural agency, 3D3 Comunicação e Cultura, consulted on Latitude’s 5th Sectorial Study and the seminar is inspired by some of these findings.
On the second day, the programme will focus on the issue of internationalization. After a Keynote by artist Rosângela Rennó, Galleries in Debate will present a roundtable discussion with Jacqueline Uhlmann and Maria Baró, moderated by Llucià Homs (Talking Galleries). The morning session will close with a one-hour mock “speed-dating” session, during which the participants will have the opportunity to have individual meetings with a variety of experts—among them, gallerists, exhibitions managers, and attorneys. The final afternoon of the programme will open with a speech by Celso Grisi (Tauil & Chequer Advogados Associados a Mayer Brown LLP) addressing legal landmarks in the art market, and following this, work groups will be organized, encouraging the attending professionals to share conclusions about the topics covered over the two days.
Galleries in Debate is promoted by Latitude: Platform for Brazilian Galleries Abroad, a partnership between APEX-Brasil – Agência Brasileira de Promoção de Exportações e Investimentos (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency) and ABACT – Associação Brasileira de Arte Contemporânea (Brazilian Association of Contemporary Art)
Latitude’s 5th Sectorial Study on the Brazilian Art Market
In parallel to Galleries in Debate, Latitude also recently released the results of the 5th Sectorial Study. The study analyses the activities and economic performance of Latitude member galleries who largely operate in the primary market. The study found that despite the economic crisis having intensified in Brazil in 2015, the contemporary art market remained strong for the surveyed galleries as the sector mainly continued to benefit from increased revenue and sales in the international market.
