The first week of April will host the opening of the 13th edition of SP-Arte, the São Paulo International Art Festival. Occupying the entire city, the event extends beyond the boundaries of Ibirapuera Park to promote a citywide arts festival that includes museums, galleries and cultural spaces with over 180 events in its calendar.
SP-Arte’s mission to promote contemporary and modern art includes a commitment to perfomance, as well as design. The design sector introduces Projetos de Arquitetos, a new segment that features projects by renowned Brazilian architects such as Isay Weinfeld and Paulo Mendes da Rocha. Additional highlights include a special preview of Japan House São Paulo—the newest São Paulo cultural institution scheduled to open in May 2017 will present a survey of Japanese contemporary art inside the Pavilion.
“SP-Arte interweaves artists, galleries, museums, and other cultural spaces together to form a festival that is larger than one single event. In April, São Paulo is the place to be, it is the best moment to see and experience the energy of the city in a celebration of art,” invites Fernanda Feitosa, SP-Arte’s founder and director.
São Paulo will be buzzing with an intense cultural program. The week starts with an opening of Alexandre da Cunha at the independent space Pivô, and a special architectural visit to Praça das Artes, designed by Paulo Mendes da Rocha. During the week, visitors will be able to attend artist and curator led tours offered by Museu de Arte São Paulo (Masp) and Pinacoteca de Estado de São Paulo as well as kid friendly visits at Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM). Instituto Tomie Ohtake will also participate in SP-Arte week with the event Turbulências, including conversations with artists like Navid Nurr, Bosco Sodi and Waltercio Caldas. Another event set for SP-Arte week will be the exhibition produced with Videobrasil, presenting an overview of contemporary Brazilian video art including artists like Miguel Rio Branco and Claudia Andujar.
Gallery Night
After a successful first edition, SP-Arte will organize Gallery Nights are scheduled to return on April 3 and 4, in four different neighborhoods throughout the city (Vila Madalena, Pinheiros, Jardins and Itaim). Galleries will host exhibition openings, guided visits and talks from 5–10pm. See the complete agenda here.
Talks
Organized in partnership with ARTE!Brasileiros magazine, the program discusses contemporary topics in visual arts, bringing together culture specialists, collectors, historians, gallerists and artists. Spaces are limited—book your spot in advance here.
Performance
Focused on durational performances, this section will bring together nine different presentations.Their themes are varied, ranging from reflections on everday events to referencing the acclaimed Brazilain artist Tunga and the mysticism in his work.

Design Sector
Characterized by the local landscape, which boasts an abundance of wood and natural resources, Brazilian modern and contemporary designs are distinguished by skillful handcraft. Booths will showcase colonial, modern and contemporary pieces that have contributed to the consolidation recognized in Brazilian design today.
The sector presents nine new galleries and welcome highlights such as Hugo França, Lina Bo Bardi, Jacqueline Terpins and a special collaboration with artist Carlos Vergara.
Exhibition
The design sector will also display Bei Publishing House’s private collection of indigenous Brazilian stools. The collection consists of 200 wooden pieces produced in various regions of Brazil. The selection exhibited at SP-Arte balances symbolic, utilitarian and decorative aspects, facing the cultural universe and cosmology of the ethnicities that make them. It is a precious opportunity to get to know one of the most original manifestations of Brazilian traditional art, crafts and culture.
