The High Commission of Canada in London in collaboration with Art Mûr gallery is pleased to present Self-Abstractions, a group exhibition organized by curator Anaïs Castro with Jannick Deslauriers, Cal Lane, Marie-Eve Levasseur, Nadia Myre and Jinny Yu brought together on the theme of conceptual self-portraiture.
On November 2, The High Commission of Canada will host a panel discussion with Jannick Deslauriers, Marie-Eve Levasseur and Nadia Myre which will be moderated by Habda Rashid, Assistant Curator at the Whitechapel Gallery.
Self-Abstractions
In an era characterised by an excessive proliferation of selfies, some artists are deploying counter-strategies to represent themselves in their work by favouring a conceptual approach that uses objects or gestures in lieu of self-imagery. Jannick Deslauriers, Cal Lane, Marie-Eve Levasseur, Nadia Myre and Jinny Yu are brought together in this exhibition for the creative ways in which they represent themselves within their practice—granting a consideration of their identity as shifting and open-ended entities. An examination of these strategies offer an understanding of identity politics as existing outside the body and as being the product of systemic power structures such as culture, society, economy, history and technology, thus yielding a valid social epistemology.

About Canada House
The Canada Gallery occupies a small but vibrant space inside Canada House. The gallery serves as a window into the contemporary Canadian art scene and aims to bring the work of artists who are established in Canada to a wider audience in the United Kingdom. Open Monday to Saturday and situated on Trafalgar Square, Canada House works in partnership with Canadian and British institutions and private galleries to create exhibitions that reflect the modern, innovative country that is Canada in the 21st century. About Art Mûr
Established in 1996, Art Mûr has evolved into one of the largest private contemporary art galleries in Canada.
