HOW Art Museum is pleased to announce the launch of HOW International Curatorial Residency Program and its open call for curators and scholars worldwide who are interested to get deeper insight of Chinese contemporary art scene.
The program offers short-term and intensive residencies at HOW Art Museum (Shanghai). Co-sponsored by HOW Art Museum and Onehome Art Hotel, the residency provides individualized arrangements. The arrangements include meetings with art professionals, studio visits, gallery and institution visits, and attendance at selected events. Furthermore, the participants are invited to work in collaboration with HOW Art Museum team, as well as to produce a website article, or to organize a public event during the residency period.
The program provides accommodation at Onehome Art Hotel and working space at HOW Art Museum. The program will not include travel costs.
HOW International Curatorial Residency Program aims to motivate residency exchange opportunities around the world and to forge durable institutional relationships in the long run. We encourage applications based on a wide spectrum of curatorial practices, research skills and professional experiences.
About HOW Art Museum
HOW Art Museum was founded by Chinese collector Mr. Zheng Hao, and Mr. Yun Cheagab has served as director of the museum since 2012. It consists of two museums, namely HOW Art Museum (Shanghai) and HOW Art Museum (Wenzhou). The latter opened in 2013 and has held 20 contemporary art exhibitions.
HOW Art Museum (Shanghai), which located in Pudong New District of Shanghai opened to public in September 2017. It pioneers to create a new model of operating a “Night Art Museum” for the convenience of the public, opening from 1 pm to 10 pm regularly, and 10am to 10pm on the weekends and holidays. The museum spreads over three floors, with the first and second floor acting as the exhibition space while the third floor on which HOW Design Center and HOW Store are situated. Following the inaugural exhibition MANIFESTO: Julian Rosefeldt. Works 2005- 2017 (September 20–December 31, 2017), the current exhibition on view at HOW Art Museum is Lettres du Voyant: Joseph Beuys x Nam June Paik (January 20–May 13, 2018).
About Onehome Art Hotel
Onehome Art Hotel (Shanghai), the largest art hotel in China is next door to HOW Art Museum (Shanghai). As the significant component of HOW Art Complex, Onehome Art Hotel showcases art from the collection of HOW Art Museum as well as the collection of the museum founder Mr. Zheng Hao. More than 1000 art pieces, ranging from Royal Cloisonné antiques to contemporary art by artists such as Damien Hirst, Yayoi Kusama, and Markus Lüpertz are exhibited at every corner of the hotel. The 16-story hotel boasts of 319 rooms with 28 themed suites which are each modeled after the work of a particular master including Pablo Picasso, Gustav Klimt and Andy Warhol.
About the application
Both institutional and independent curators and scholars who work within the context of contemporary art are eligible to apply.
Applicants should have at least a moderate level of English or Chinese speaking ability, and should feel comfortable engaging in discussions in one of these two languages.
Dates
Application starts from April 1, 2018 and continues throughout the year.
Notification: the selected participants will be notified via email.
Residency: up to 30 days since April 20, 2018. The applicants can propose their preferred time frame, the minimum stay is 7 days. The final dates for arrival and departure to and from Shanghai should be discussed between HOW Art Museum and the selected participants.
