The Department of Art and Art History at The University of Texas at Austin presents Affordable Dream House, an exhibition featuring ten artists from the 2018 Studio Art MFA graduating class. The work will be on display at the Visual Arts Center (VAC) from April 20 to May 11, 2018. An opening reception honoring the artists will be held Friday, April 20, 6–8pm. The MFA Colloquia, a two-night series of artist gallery talks, will take place April 30 and May 2 at 5:30pm CST.
Moving across disciplines, Affordable Dream House includes work from each artist developed from two years of studio practice and research. The title of the exhibition, chosen to illustrate the tongue-in-cheek desire to carve out an individualized sense of self within a peer group, also reflects a feeling of community built not just from proximity to one’s neighbors, but through intersecting interests and collaborations.
Participating artists: Hiba Ali, Evelyn Contreras, Siera Hyte, Marisa Laguardia, Marta Lee, Rosa Nussbaum, Emily O’Leary, Anika Steppe, riel Sturchio, Ingrid Tremblay
About the MFA Studio Art program
Over their course of study, MFA students in Studio Art work closely with department faculty to fine-tune existing skill sets and develop new approaches, both conceptual and technical, to their studio practice. In a challenging interdisciplinary environment, students often work across media and in close collaboration with one another, exploring the potential overlaps and depths of established disciplines. The department’s visiting artist and critic program brings acclaimed professionals from outside the university into graduate studios. As part of the diverse intellectual community that makes up The University of Texas at Austin, students have access to resources across campus allowing for a richly informed approach to art making.
