The series, which will be free and open to the public, launches with Nato Thompson, Artistic Director of Philadelphia Contemporary, former Artistic Director of Creative Time.
Talks is the first partnership between nonprofits Locust Projects and ArtCenter/South Florida, two of the city’s most venerable cultural institutions, coming together under new leadership to provide artist-centered programming.
During intimate conversations throughout 2018, six arts leaders will talk about their curatorial vision and practice, the art and artists that have shaped their careers, and how they support the work of artists, whether in museums or non-traditional spaces.
As a part of the series, the curators will visit the studios of local artists, providing vital feedback and visibility that can build a bridge between artists working in Miami and the international cultural community.
“Both Locust Projects and ArtCenter/South Florida exist for our local artists. We want to see them grow, and provide them access to opportunities that can expand their practice. By working together, our two organizations can expand our reach and do more for, and with, our artists,” said Dennis Scholl, ArtCenter’s president and CEO.
In addition to Thompson, speakers will include Valerie Cassel Oliver, Sydney and Frances Lewis Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; Trevor Schoonmaker, Artistic Director Prospect.4 New Orleans; Chief Curator and Patsy R. and Raymond D. Nasher Curator of Contemporary Art at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University; Deana Haggag, President & CEO of United States Artists; Heidi Zuckerman, Nancy and Bob Magoon CEO and Director, Aspen Art Museum and José Roca, Artistic Director of FLORA ars+natura, Bogota, curator, LARA collection.
“Critical dialogue is an important part of having a dynamic and growing visual arts community. Our partnership with Art Center/South Florida allows Locust Talks to expand in reach and impact. Our new Talks series will further deepen the knowledge base about curatorial practice in Miami, as well as provide our artists with even greater access and feedback from top arts leaders,” said Lorie Mertes, Locust Projects’ Executive Director.
